Okay guys, I have finally isolated the problem of getting no fire after converting my 8N to 12 volts. After jumping around the original 6 volt ballast resistor, the darn thing fired right up and runs like a charm. At least it did for the couple of minutes I let it run...Now here is the final question (I hope) for you kind and helpful gents. Can I run on just the one ballast resistor that was provided with the conversion kit without causing damage or do I need to go ahead and replace the original reisitor so I am running on both in series. With the tractor running with just the one ballast resistor I am pushing about 11 1/2 volts into the coil.

Sarge..... ...depends. Iff'n yer 12-volt frontmount conversion kit included a new modern 12-volt squarecan ignition coil, then 11.5-volts into the coil is a good voltage numeber (max=12.6, min=9.5)

BUT..... iff'n yer still using yer original 6-volt squarecan coil, then the MAX volts = 3.2, min=2.5. and you will need BOTH the "infamous ballast resistor" and the kit supplied 12-to-6 volt converting resistor. Understand?..... ....Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason

That said, I still haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 8N, and I know how to do it right the first time. Infact, I know 8-ways to do it and they all work.

Thanks Dell that is what I needed to know. Yes, a new 12 volt coil came with the kit, so I should finally be good to go. I appreciate all of the help you guys have given me the last couple of days. In the 18 yrs that I have had this old beast, this is the first time that I have had any kind of major problem, that I couldn't figure out myself. this one really had me stumped....Again thanks for all of the great advice.

The fact that it had a new 12v coil was why yuo had no spark with both resistors in series... not enough primary voltage/current.
