I am stuck with getting the 8N starter all the way back in and the 2 bolts to line up with holes. I've got the starter to within about 1/4 inch out but it refuses to go the rest of the way. Starter also needs to go a bit towards block so bolt holes can line up. Won't budge. What am I doing wrong. Thanks much.

Bruce

Did it look like this? Closed..as opposed to spun out and engaged.

It's like the bottom picture. Does it have to be closed in order to install??

Yes it does, or it wont fit over your ring gear that you see through the hole when the starter is removed.

Was this a new starter? Did you rebuild the old one?

"Was this a new starter? Did you rebuild the old one? "

This is the same starter I took out. Just had it tested. Thanks.

On the original N starter drive if it is engaged while it is off the tractor as when one might "test" the starter on the bench by putting power to it to spin it. This spins out the starter gear and it will not go back in until the engine spins it enough to overcome the centrifugal mechanism designed to hole it in till the engine spins it enough to disengage it again.

You can sometimes spin it in the direction of rotation @ clockwise at the gear assembly looking at the washer on the end of the drive with a heavy brush on a bench grinder or with something like a side grinder with a small belt around the starter drive with it held in a vice with the nuts on the two long bolts to hold it securely together while spinning it with the side grinder. Tricky but it will work if you hold your mouth just right! :O)

On some of the starter drives it is impossible to reinstall the starter unless the starter drive is disengaged.

Did you possibly just put a new drive in? Many of
the improved ratchet 600rpm drives(that eliminate
starter kick out when trying to start)needed to
have the housing ground. As dealers back then we
had a template and saw to modify the housing. Or
did you run the starter and kick the drive out?
makes it harder to get back in. Chuck

ararboin..... ....since the starter motor is only held together by my good looks (grin), many puttta nut on the 8"-long starter bolts to keep'um from falling apart while jigglin' things around durning removal and installation. Did you forget to do the "obvious"?

Otherwize, just jiggle and rotate yer starter motor/armature enuff so the starter bendix gear meshes with the flywheel ringgear.

tip: while you have that 1/4" space between starter motor endplate and flywheel housing, use a wire-brush to "polish" the 2-metals clean for better grounding and faster starter motor turning for eazier starting..... .....Dell

Did you replace the drive at the end of the shaft? Was the drive closed when you put it through the hole? Is the starter together and tight? Remember those 2 long bolts that go through the starter hold the whole starter together.

"Was the drive closed when you put it through the hole?"

Hmmm, don't know what you mean by closed. But yes I had the bolts on, tho they weren't very tight.
