I recently purchased a ford tractor. Lord help me i have no idea what model it is. You cannot read the serial number anymore weither it was ground off or wore off it is gone even rubbing with a pencil didn't work. it has I-Beam style control arms. larger bolt patten wheels 3 forward one reverse transmission. It has a newer model steering control arms. and the 3pt seems to have postion control?? it is beyond me to understand that one. Now on to my question the hydro fluid is a little milky and needs to be changed. Can someone tell me what type of fluid to use and how much. Next question, i purchased the tractor to plow and disc a garden with and to do some grade work. (BTW) it pulls a 5ft grader box better than 135 massey did. i went today to purchase a 2 bottom plow and a disc. The guy at the farm supply store wouldn't sell me a 2 row plow. he said my tractor wouldn't pull it and he didn'twant to have to take it back when i couldn't use it. Is he full of it or am i wrong in seeing other fords like mine pulling a 2 row plow? thanks for any help.

When I was a kid (late 50s to mid 60s) my uncle and I farmed 600 acers. Me on a 8N pulling a 2 bottom and him on other tractors with a 3 to 4 bottoms. Can't believe a dealer would say a 8N won't pull a 2 bottom. DUMMMMMY

As lonestar said.. you got a 9n or 2n... The fluid ideally is 90wt gl 1 or gl3 oil.. Either your draft controll spring is frozen.. making it appear to have position control.. or there may be an add on position control jig on it.. there are quite a few of them out there.

An average N can pull 2 bottoms 10-12-14.. that is specifically what it was designed for. or a single 16 ...

Your equipment dealer is a moron.. or at least.. ignorant. Unless you have stiff soil.. 2 is fine. Either he's older and dumb.. or he's young and don't know nothing yet....

Sounds like you have a 9N or early 2N w/ a later 8N steering setup, but on to your questions:

The general hydro fluid choice is(4 1/2 gallons)GL-1 or the fluid labeled for early Ford tractors in Tractor Supply stores. Originally, they called for straight mineral oil. You will get MANY opinions on this.

If your tractor is in pretty good shape(good compression & tune)it will pull a 2-bottom plow w/ no problem(unless you have very hard clay soil).
