My 8n's proofmeter hasn't worked since the day I
got her in '93. Didn't miss it until I replaced
the cable on my Oliver 55 tachmeter. Pretty neat
knowing the engine and pto rpm. But, there is a
short (about 1 inch) piece of cable stuck in the
proofmeter head. How does this thing come apart,
short of grinding down the rim? Or is this one of
those shop-only $150 repair jobs? I have been
told that the proofmeter seldom works for long.
Is this true, and if so, is there a reasonable
replacement? Thanks in advance.

You can buy a new meter for anywher from $50-90 depending on the source. Cables are around $12-19.
The proofmeter face has a crimped edge. You can uncrimp it with a small bladed instrument or pair of flush cutter. Then you peel the gasket and glass out, unscrew the guts from the can. There's a rubber gasket on the back around the drive fitting, too. The broken cable end should pull right out. The meter only has a couple of gears and a disc and a drive magnet. If the drive collar won't turn, soak it well with penetrating oil and work it back and forth to see if it will free up. If it turns but the needle doesn't move, then, most of the time, the indicator spindle has broken off the disc. It can be soldered or super-glued. If the little clock-spring is sprung or broken, you might as well get a new meter. parts are unavailable.
