Fuel Problem?

Just rebuilt engine and carb on my 52 8N and am trying to start it for the first time. New battery, new coil, new points, rotor, plugs and rebuilt carb. Turns over, but won't fire. Have points set to .025, and get spark there as well as to the plugs, so am thinking something is wrong with my carb rebuild. I have (clean) fuel at the elbow into the carb, and when I pull the drain plug at the bottom of the carb, gas comes out. However, I don't smell gas on the choke side of the carb, and spark plugs look dry after cranking the engine. What should I be checking next? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Alan..... ..rebuilt engine, eh? Tight rings, tight bearings, tight seals, slow turning 6-volt starter motor due to all the new extra friction. Replace yer invisable gas contaminated sparkies with NEW DRY AutoLite 437 sparkies gapped to 0.025 ...AND... Jump-itt with 12-volts and a squirt of ether quick-start. Simple, eh?

This is not to say you may have different problems. Theres been a rash of miss-marked camshaft drive gears that greatly effect the engine timing and compression and its not-unheard-of to have the camshaft installed outta time. Check yer engine compression. New engine should compress about 130psi, miss-installed camshaft will compress about 70psi. (n.b..... .Ford specs: 90psi, min)..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Having never started this tractor, I don"t know how slow "slow" is, but it certainly turns over slower than a car. Like you said all tight and a 6 volt system. I"ll pick up some AutoLites and try the method you"ve suggested. Hope to be able to reply with results today or tomorrow. Thanks!

Alan..... ...all 6-volt starter motors turn over SLOOOooow for modern ears used to the whirr of 12-volt sewing machine starter motors. But believe me, even slow starts these low compression engines and beats the alternative of "arm-strong" starter witha crank'em thru the radiator.

BTW, 12-volts ain't gonnna hurt yer 6-volt starter motor as long as you don't crank forever and OVERHEAT it and melt the internal solder guttz..... ...Dell

I hear you. When I was a kid, I used to help my neighbor start his old '45 Case tricycle gear tractor, by hand-cranking it for him. It actually worked very well. Never even broke an arm or anything.
