1952 8N with a Sherman... caught between gears???

Hello all, i just bought a really nice running, good sheet metal 8N, the only problem is it"s locked up tighter than a drum. The guy said he was taking it off of his trailer by just putting the clutch in and letting it roll, and it had a brush hog on it, that caught on the way down. Now the wheels are locked up the tranny won"t shift but the sherman will go into neutral and allow you start the tractor. If you let the clutch out... bam it stops dead.

Any ideas or help? Plus I would like to get the repair manuals for this thing and the sherman, any good connections for that?

Good News: got it "unstuck" between gears...

Bad News: Missing a tooth with some others chewed up.

Bob..... ..ain't ya lucky that Shermans have a "neutral"?

Yer trannys been jambed into 2-gears at the same time. That is why it is locked-up. And that is why yer engine dies when you let the clutch out. And that is why yer PTO driven brush-hog has a push-button disconned coupler so you can hydraulicly raise the brush-hog without the blades whirling. Remember, yer hydraulic lift pump is also run by the same PTO gears that drive the brushhogg blades.

As fer yer current delima. Remove yer 8n's tranny shifter top-cover (watch out for spring loaded detent balls going sprong) Remove yer gear shifting forks and inspect yer gears to find out which 2-sliding main gears are on the same gear of the counter-gearshaft. (tip: iff'n he was reversing off the trailer, probably reverse and 1st gear) Note also, the PTO shaft is also coupled to the tranny counter-gearshaft with the behind yer leftheel PTO shifter lever.

Recommend you consider the merits of buying your very own copy of the I&T FO-4 manual. $27 (cheap)..... ...respectfully, Dell

Thanks, the PTO is locked up too. I can't shift it out of gear either.

I am definitely going to buy my own manual.

But before I tear everything down I was hoping someone knew by the sound of it what it was. I have the shifter cover off and the gears toward the back of the tractor are the ones that seem to be frozen up.
