A stupid little starter soledoid question

I've noticed that there happen to be available on the market, a four post and a three post solenoid. My 8N (which supposebly had been converted to 12V) has the four post variety. All the wireing digrams I have seen looks to me that a three post solenoid has been used. O.K. here goes. What's the difference between the two? When rewireing the tractor, can I wire it like it shows in the digrams as a three post solenoid?

By the way, what brought on all this confusion is I have to replace my alternator. The #2 spade rusted off of it and it won't work any more.

Thanks for all your insight and opinions.

Why not open it up and Hard wire the sucker. Spade Term is just a convenient connection.

The four term solenoid brings both sides of the relay coil to external connectors (small con's)Need to jumper one to Bat side, other (normal wiring) to the Switched ground via switch.

THE 4 POST SOLENOID IS A UNIVERSAL ONE THAT IS ISOLATED FROM GND. WITH THIS SOL YOU CAN TIE ONE TERM TO THE BATT VOLTAGE AND THE OTHER TO THE STARTER SW. THIS SOL LETS YOU USE THE START SW THAT PROVIDES A GND TO START, LIKE YOUR ORIGINAL STARTER SW.

THE OTHER TYPE OF SOL IS TIED TO A GND AND CAN BE USED BUT NOW YOU MUST APPLY BATT VOLTAGE TO ENGAGE THE STARTER.

YOU REALLY SHOULD ALWAYS USE THE ORIGINAL START SW SINCE IT HAS THE SAFETY FEATURE OF THE INTERLOCK WITH THE GEAR LEVER THAT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO START THE ENGINE WHILE IN GEAR. WE NEED ALL THE SAFETY WE CAN GET.

The 8N starter solenoid is a three terminal one. The winding is connected to the battery terminal inside and then grounded with the starter switch via the third terminal and the starter interlock.

This one will not operate if mounted/connected backward which internally connects the winding to ground (starter side).

If the unused small post on the solenoid is live when the solonoid is energized, it will work fine wired as a three post. That post is used to bypass the resister when starting on some installations.
