I have a craftsman riding mower. It has a 16.5 hp. Kohler engine. After it gets warmed up the gas stops flowing to the fuel filter. I have removed and checked the tank. I have replaced the fuel line and fuel filter. It is gravity fed, so what could be stopping the gas from flowing? Help please!

Make sure it is all down hill from the tank, no sags allowed.

I'm with Stahlmaster, betting the venting of the tank is bad... maybe not... but at first blush, that seems IT to me... duey

OT Gas flow in kohler engine in reply to PatPA, 05-11-2006 05:15:35
Pat,
Does that engine have a fuel pump near the engine?
Will the fuel flow without the filter hooked up?
Does the engine quit from lack of fuel after warming up?
Is the fuel tank filled to the top?
I would check the routing of the fuel line from the tank to the filter to assure proper flow. Then I would make sure the fuel tank is vented. Check the vent hole in the fuel cap, it may be plugged up. Try running the engine with the cap a bit loose. Post back.

Hi Stahlmaster,
No fuel pump on engine, gravity fed. Gas will flow from tank without the filter on. and yes the engine quits from lack of fuel. I also tried running with the gas cap loose. No luck. Could it be getting a vapor lock?

I would suspect the fuel filter. The Kohler engines need Kohler fuel filters. I would run the engine without the filter for a few minutes and then if it runs well I'd replace the fuel filter with the recommended type.

odd one Pat, but has to be something simple. I have had a bunch of Kohlers and even have one from 1965! My lastest one has a pump but all the others have been gravity fed. TRY this ,, remove the filter completly, and see if it runs. If so,, you got a bad from the factory filter. I changed mine out with the larger ones that are see though. Also these engines can be real picky about dirty air filters and some have low oil shut offs.. Just my ideas for now.

Oh, remembered one other thing, I had one that would vapor lock cause someone moved the gas line from the factory position.

Now I got one for you.. How the heck is grass, dirt and other crap betting into my gas tank? Tank is located under the seat on the John Deere yard tractor and I am always careful to only open the cap when I fill it. I use a pump device from a closed gas can to refill. This one has me stumped. Going to pump out all the gas today before I start and filter it back through a paint filter and watch it for a bit.

Let us know.
