MY FORD (WHICH I THINK IS A 9N) HAS A SHIFT LEVER NEAR THE DRIVERS LEFT KNEE THAT SHIFTS FROM HIGH TO LOW RANGE. I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS ON OTHERS THAT I HAVE LOOKED AT. IS IT ORIGINAL OR ADDED AFTERMARKET?
THANKS, RON

Sounds like my 41 9N. It's a Sherman Hi Low transmission. I believe they are after market add ons, but are on quite a few tractors. Great for running on the road. You can tell the year (and model) of your tractor by the serial number on the engine. Should be on the left side, just below the head. Read your number then look it up on the main page of this site. Just check the left hand side of this window for Serial Numbers. Jim

In case you hadn't figured it out yet, the Hi-Low transmission also alters the speed of your PTO. So watch out when running the 540 rpm mower with the tranny stepped up.

Ron..... ...yep, thats a dealer installed option commonally called a "Sherman" aux tranny. Its mounted between the clutch and the real 9N 3-speed tranny. There are 4 versions out there, an OverDrive, an UnderDrive, a Reverser for forklift operation, and the most desireable, the 3-speed Combo that has a "dogleg" looking shifter arm.

You might want to check the "archives" at the top of this most excellent N-Board..... ...Dell

Sounds like a Sherman step-up or step-down aux. transmission. They were a fairly common dealer installed aftermarket item. I believe there were 3 types (step-up, step-down, and 1 that had both step-up and step-down combined). I'm sure someone else will come along with more info, or you might try a search of the archives to see what that turns up. Good luck!
