Hydraulic Lift Question

1951 8N---in 40 Degree weather lift will hold up a 5' Razorback Bushhog for 90 minutes before let down begins. Last week in 65 Degree weather, after mowing for 3 plus hours, it takes the lift about 10 seconds (noticeably slower) to raise the mower for transporting to another area. Is this normal when the oil warms up or the weather gets warmer, or a sign that something needs to be looked at? New fluid put in last Fall. Fluid level is where it is supposed to be and no water in fluid. I am using limiter chains to reduce stress on the lift while mowing. Thanks, Tim

Yep that sounds about normal.

One thing you might do, use the old 80-90 weight GL1 hydraulic oil instead of the New Holland MC134 stuff (which is a lot thinner).

Other than that you are looking at having to open her up and figure out where the leaks are, if its leaking down too fast for you.

What kind of "fluid" is currently in this tractor?? The Good stuff (90wt) of the thin crap they are fobbingoff on unsuspecting tractor-drivers!! Henry Ford (or his engineers) said 90 wt oil.

The fella I bought the tractor from was a retired farmer who has 3 N tractors. I called and asked if he remembered what kind of fluid he used and the answer was "whatever" they sell at Farm and Fleet. He made a comment about "don't get the thick stuff" because it doesn't work well in cold weather. Should I start with replacing the fluid with the GL1? or leave it alone for now as it is working "ok"---Tim

Since the previous owner said "don't get the thick stuff" because it doesn't work well in cold weather sounds like its "the new stuff". I'm not sure why Henry prefered GL-1 to the "new stuff" 8-) but the the GL1 will likely mediate your leakdown issues at the cost of poorer cold weather performance. Your tractor so you get to choose.

I'd replace it! But it is ur tractor. And I don't know where U live. I live in Virginia, and run the thick stuff year-around. Course it don't get as cold nowadays as it did in The Good Old Days. I firmly beleive in keeping stuffs stock as possible. YMMV!!

Yep---I am going to change it. I just called FandFleet and they dont carry the GL1 but the GL6. I am guessing he put in the "thin" stuff. I live in WI----doesnt seem to get as cold as it used to either. I will try TSC next. Any other places that carry the GL1? thanks, Tim
