Hi gang!! My buddy in New Mexico called me here in Texas last night from his computer using a program he found on line from>Link

Anyway,, would ya’ll take a look and see what ya think? Will it work ok on this Direcway connection to another Direcway connect, like my Daughter up in Oregon from here in Texas. He cannot get it through his hard head that the whole world does not have cable available.

I do appreciate all of your advice and comments and felt like you folks would be the best to ask about this.

The best thing about it is that you can do free conference calls for free. You can also call a cell or a landline for fee, which varies depending on location. I use it for work and for home.

I'd LOVE to have it!! Unfortunately, due to the INCOMPETENCE, GREED, Etc of VERI*ZON, I can't get decent speed on their antiquated land-line, which the Greedy BVarstids have REFUSED to replace!! I had an outage last summer, and the repairman came from another county (Apparently all the local Verizon Guys were at a meeting) and he was aghast at the condition of the line!! But the VERIZON ass*holes will not replace it, because it "transmits phone conversations" OK! I live waaaay out in the country (Not as country as it used to be, but that's a different rant, hehee). Verizon is concerned more with the Bottom Line, that with Customer Service!! He**, I get higher speeds in the PI than I do here!! Sometimes I feel Like Eddie Albert in Green Acres! At least my phone ain't outside on a pole like his was!! Whatever happened to the concept of Customer Service?? Eventually, if enough YUPPIES move into the area, the Idjits At Verizon will upgrade the lines, so they can Work At HOme! Of course when that happens the area will be totally unlivable, but that's a differenty rant, hehehe) And My celfone is also Verizon, due tot he fact that they are the only one that sorta works here!! I hate VERIZON!!!! ;-(

Skype is the free computer version of Vonage Works very well but just like with web surfing you can get small drop outs in your voice or garbeled but no worse than most cell service. Paying for vonage gives you the ability to use your existing phones and not have to use your microphone and computer.

All it does is convert analog voice into a digital signal that can be transmitted over the Internet the same as online music is transmitted. You have to have a decent Internet connection at both ends, but then it just streams audio like any other audio stream to the other user. It seems like magic, but is really straight forward when you understand the technology. this has been around for over 5 years, and while the audio quality is not great (mostly depending on your Internet connection speed at both ends and the distance it is having to travel) it does work and is as free as any other data that is floating around on the Internet.

Ya, the skype program works pretty slick... you will need to have a high speed connection (DSL or Cable modem) for it to work. I talk to a pals out in Butte, MT and a buddy over in cologne, germany with mine for free... :)

My father in-law was in town this weekend, We went to an office supply store and he bought a Skype compatible headset. We were able to talk to my sister in law who is in Romania. He used his laptop with a verizion wireless modem and it worked fine. And we do not even have good cell service here.

I have seen it work, give it a try.
