Before I go a heating & hammering I’d like to make sure the Hydraulic control arm is NOT supposed to look like this. Certainly the sketch in the FO manual exploded view looks straight but it has a section cut away.

When I removed from tractor along with the rusted frozen linkages it looked like this except it was slightly bent in the other direction too. I straightened that out (in the Z axis in this photo) but didn’t remove this bend. Heat marks are from a previous repair, I bent the other direction cold.

Funny part is that it seems to line up with Zane’s jig bent the way it is. Quadrant 2/3 of the way back on the elongated holes, slack out of linkage in draft mode. Alignment falls apart though in position mode. I would have to crank that spring way way down.

Thanks as always. Your collective guidance provides a great deal of reassurance to those of us who have only the faintest idea what we are doing but are willing to try.

Sir if that is one of my jigs I see in the picture the instructions that came with it would have had in them what to do in such a case?????

Straighten it cold by holding an anvil of some sort on one side and strike it with a hammer on the other until it is straight.

Zane

Tis your jig Zane and instructions seem clear enough about adding washer. Just didn't know if I needed to straighting the rod out...

Some folks here recomend heating rod, you indicate cold working. Reasons?

From my understanding it is supposed to be straight. But over the years to correct the wear on the cam and instead of replacing a worn follower pin shade tree mechanics would bend the rod. I've had an old mechanic do mine the same way instead of correcting the problem correctly without telling me what he had done. Cheap fix it did on mine, but did not last long. He just went in throught the inspection plate and heated and bent. Instead of the correct way(harder way) and remove the assemply fix/adjust.

Phil..... ....wow! Unless the N-Ford MPC p/n 8N-500 assy drawing is distorted; the 8N's p/n: 8N-504; lever assy, hand lift control; is STRAIGHT.

Interesting that you complain about the I&T FO-4 manual being unclear about it. My FO-4 has 6-pictures and 2-schematic drawings where the control arm illustrated is definately straight.

Yeah, they do have one assy drawing where for illustrative purposes to fit the picture space, the LONG control arm is air-gapped..... ....Dell
