I.m about ready to tackle my lift of my 8N. On the spline of the PTO, there's a gadget I think is an ORC. With tractor off (not running) it can be turned one way only by hand, and not the other way. I'm thinking that's what an ORC does..lets the bush hog spin without pushing the tractor. Anyway....how does it come off? It has a set screw in it that I removed. I tapped it with a hammer while pulling and it did nothing. I was tempted to drive a crowbar between the ORC and bearing flange and just beat the hell out of it till it came off..Decided I'd probably tear something up and thought better to ask ya'll. I figure smoeones been there and done that and would help me out..Thanks

Alan

Just wondering why you are taking it off? Unless you are replacing the bearing or seal on your pto shaft, you can simply pull the 4 bolts holding the pto flange on and just slide the pto shaft out as a unit, with flange and bearing carrier.. and just leave the ORC on.. then you can drop the puimp and remove the top cover.. etc.. if you need to..

Soundguy, I was curious..While PTO shaft was turning, I detected a wobble. Figured it was a bent ORC, bent PTO shaft, or a bad bearing. I'm new to tractors and am trying to figure this thing out and get it back to full functionality

probably a worn ORC, rather than a bent one. Most people forget that you have to grease the orc, or it wears out like any other moving part. Pull it, and check your pto shaft bearings.. should be no side-side movement, and a hair or less (preferably )fore/aft play.

I appreciate the info, I'm gonna take it apart next weekend (4 day weekend for me) and see what's inside, check for leaks, try to make some adjustments, change my fluid....you know the routine : )

Alan, You should have a set screw on both sides of the clutch, maybe a grease fitting on one side instead of the set screw. Remove both and rotate the clutch untill you see the hollow pin inside. Might have to turn pto to get it to aline. The pin is 5/16 and hollow,so if you do not have a 5/16 flat punch, a 5/16x2 1/2 bolt will do fine. It will be tight but drives right out.
