Starter repair and Flywheel question

I am not mechanically inclined but did manage to get the starter off, freed up and back together. When I re-installed it, it still would not turn over. I took it out again and noticed the flywheel would not budge. After working at it for some time, I decided to pour some oil in there (onto the flywheel) then worked the fan back and forth until it moved more freely. I re-installed the starter and it started right up. The problem is that now it won't go into gear. Did I screw it up by putting the oil in there and if so, what can I do to remedy the situation?

Putting oil on the clutch only made your self more problems sorry to say. I would go out and get some brake cleaner and remove the starter again and spray out the clutch are and clean out the oil before it give you more problem. As far as not getting it in gear you probably have a stuck clutch which is a common problem on tractors. Block your clutch pedel down for a few days and see if that helps if not post back and someone will tell you what to try next.

Likely, the engine was "lightly stuck" due to one or more cylinders having some moisture in them, and rusting a bit.

It is VERY UNLIKELY that putting oil on the flywheel helped free anything up. Probably, you jsut worked it back and forth enough to loosen up the engine.

Did you put enough oil in the flywheel housing that it ran out the drain hole in the bottom (which should have a cotter key hanging down, jiggling around in the hole)?

It could very likely be that your clutch is simply rusted a bit, and stuck, and has NOT been affected by the oil.

Do a site search for "stuck clutch", and you'll get some opinions on how to free it up, hopefully without splitting the tractor.

Thanks very much for your response. I located the drain and it looks like it did run out the hole. I will try cleaning out with break cleaner and blocking the clutch.

pwalsh..... ..repeat after me: NO OIL on clutch, NO OIL on starter Bendix drive.

Oil gitts slung around by flywheel onto both starter bendix screw drive and clutch splines causing them BOTH to be sticky and gummed up with MAJOR PROBLEMS. And would you believe oily clutch friction pads slip?

Me? Besides having an incredulous giggle at yer expense, don't dooer again.

Remove yer starter motor again (2nd time is always eazier) and flush out yer tranny cavity thru the starter hole with a whole spraycan of BRAKE-CLEANER. Bend the plastic spraystraw to gitta'round the corner. Iff'n it falls off, so what? Plenty of room in bottom of tranny housing. We store fallen-off bendix drive parts down there too. It will drain out yer trannys hi-tech cotter-keyed drain holes. Whatta concept!..... ...respectfully, Dell

You may have/had a compound problem.. like a tranny stuck in 2 gears, and a stuck clutch.. etc. Oil may have helped loosen the rust.. but oil will make a clutch stick and drag just as bad as rust. I fhte tractor is in neutral.. will it roll?

Thanks very much for the response. The tractor rolls easily while in neutral. I will clean out with break cleaner and block the clutch for a couple of days then see how it goes.
