I have a 9N and the starter was slow and having trouble turning over so I bought a new starter put it on. After that all I can get it do it make a click or clunk sound when I try to start it. At least before it turned over. I made bad to worse. So I took off the starter, brought down to a starter shop had it bench tested and it was fine. Put it back on the 9N and same thing. Just a clunk sound when I try to start it. Does anyone know where the problem might be?
Thanx Mark

This happened to me also, twice. make sure the starter is grounding to the tractor (bolt flange area clean- no paint).
make sure the stud on the starter is not loose.

Since no one else has mentioned this yet, you should check your battery too. You can buy a cell tester to check it. They aren't expensive. If you have a charger, put it on the battery and charge it up. Also clean both posts and the inside of each battery clamp. If the new starter does the same thing as the old one, and all you get is a click, then you're not getting the juice to the starter. Check ALL connections and clean everything up with some fine sandpaper.
Good luck!
Carl

Mark..... ....would it surprize you that yer 2-terminal roundcan starter switch under yer battery tray on yer steering column has finally burned its internal contacts? Time to replace the starter switch. Simple, eh? ..... .....respectfully, Dell

You either have bad connections of your battery cables or just plain bad battery cables. If you have the #2 or #4 auto type cables then you have bad battery cables. No matter what you need 0 or 00 battery cables or you will always have problems with the starter. Slow starter tells me your only getting a little of the current needed to turn the engine over so it has to be problems with the cables

Mark, Try cleaning the contacts where the 2 poles protrude just above the torque tube under the battery, they get dirty and oily, usually about an every 6 month job. Pete

Being that replacing parts is easier than troubleshooting (because troubleshooting takes knowledge) I put on a new starter relay, charged the battery full, put on new cables and just get a click sound when I push the ignition switch.

Is there something else that might be corroded?
I put up a picture of the starter relay which I replaced Link
What>Link am I missing ??

Mark..... ...good picture of a 2-terminal mechanical starter SWITCH, which is not the 3-terminal starter motor mounted electrically operated starter relay as used on 8N's.

Didja know that you can charge a battery and it still won't haffa nuff guttz to turn that 6-volt starter motor? You doubt? Taker into a real battery shop for a "free" test. Bettcha it flunks even tho it measures 6-volts. Thats just the way wet-cell batterys are. They gitt little shorts between their plates and just don't have the ampacity to turn the starter motor.

Surprizingly enuff tractor batterys are built tuffer than automobile batterys 'cuz they haffta live innna "off-road" un-suppended environment insteadda gliding smoothly down the asphalt. I recommend you replace yer current crappped outt battery with a real 6-volt tractor battery. I'm impressed with the (byte my tongue) John Deere branded tractor batterys. I installed 2 of'em in my Dodge Cummins Diesel dual battery rigging. I also installed one of their 6-volters in my eazy starting 8N.

Iff'n ya didn't, you should make certain that yer starter motor is really grounded by pulling it out about 1/4" and wire brush the gap between the end of the starter plate and the tranny hole..... ....Dell
