Hey all, I've been following this forum for about 6 or 7 yrs. I've even posted a time or two.
The accumulated knowledge is incredible so I thought maybe someone could steer me in the right direction.I have a 94 explorer and after 20 or 30 minutes of driving the duct gate seems to close off gradually until there is no output from the vents even though the blower is working fine. I've checked vacum lines for a collapsed line but all seems to be in order. Any help would surely be most appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Randy

Frozen evaporator first thought low freon. If this is in cooling mode. If other are we talking vent? Details please. Sometimes vacuum leak will show during acceleration. Normal vacuum low. Idle vacuum will be highest. Is problem lack of air flow or not cold?

It sound as though the evaporator core is freezing solid and then no air flow can get through it. Install gauges and check the low side pressure at 2000 rpms. Gauge reading should go to about 30 to 35 and then the compressor should cycle out. The low pressure side reading of a car a/c will be roughly the same as ambient temperature, ie 30 psi will be aproximately 30 degrees F. Since moisture in the air around the evaporator core will freeze at 32 deg F any thing below about 30 will allow it to freeze up. When the car sits for a while the big block of ice melts and allows air flow again. A new low pressure cycling switch can be easily installed correcting the problem.

Thanks Rocky,
That makes perfect sense as I think about it.
Will give it a try.

Randy,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help but was wondering if:

A) After 20-30 minutes can you get air out of the defog to the window?
2) Have you checked all your fuses and relays?

Thanks Murn. I had not thought of that. i was thinking along the lines of acontrol problem. What doesn't make sense though is that it works for a while then slowly shuts down. If I shut the car off for a few minutes it will work properly again for a while then do it again?????

Randy, I sure hope it is not what I just went thru on my 87 T Bird. A huge rats nest cramed in next to the evaporator. Nothing else to do but pull the heater box. Good luck.
