Power Washing

Would like to clean up my 8N, it has the normal accumulation of "crud" for a tractor this old. I am not trying to restore it, it is a nice original tractor that I just want to spruce up. If I use a power washer do I run the risk of creating problems that might make me regret using a power washer? I know it would not be wise to wash things like the distributor, starter, generator, air cleaner, etc.
Thanks

Before I power wash my 2N iI will take some plastic grocery store bags and cover up the distributor, and air filter opening and anything else that might cause problems. I start it right after the wash to see if I screwed up anything,

With a pressure washer your danger is not so much the water as it is the blast force. I routinely blast (3000 PSI) the outside of starters, alternators, and distrubutors but I don't direct the stream inside. Watch out for light weight wiring, vacuum lines, openings into fluid reservoirs, etc.

Sounds like you already have a handle on what not to blast. Like Dan said, cleaner is better and definitely flush and change the fluids afterwards.

First thing I do before bringing an old tractor in to work on it is run the tractor through a car wash booth while it is on the trailer. I use a few cycles of the engine degreaser, then hit it with the high pressure soap, then a cycle or two of high pressure clean water. I try to stay away from hitting the distributor area, voltage regulator, and shifter boot too badly, but the rest is fair game. Never had a problem with it once it dried up, plus I change the fluids anyway when I bring them in.

Sure is nicer working on a tractor that does not have grease EVERYWHERE.

Good luck,
Dan

LOL - are you saying that you treated your Rustbucket tractor to a car wash before you started working on it? I can just see that open transmission case filling up with soapy water now! Carl

Rustbucket was a little different - I had him delivered to my house instead of me picking him up (I bought the tractor from a guy near Austin, TX). I did not have a chance to drag the entire tractor to the car wash, but did make several trips to my local car wash with individual parts after I took them off. However; a good high pressure wash would have only HELPED that transmission :-)
