My (52 8n)steering gear box had a lot of slop in it. I pulled the box and cleaned it out. Removed shim in coloum to achieve preload. Adjusted slop out of each
pitman arm now the tractor will not turn so that the spindles will reach their stops. The steering is smooth it turns easy each way it just will not turn as far as it did before. Is this normal? I marked the steering arms before taking it apart and the timming marks inside are lined up. Do i need to move the steering arms back to the next slot? I'm puzzled Thanks Rip.

Sounds like maby I removed to much of the play in the racks. I"ll try loosing it up first. The ball assembly is very close to the middle of its travel as their is only a slight diffrence in the turning range side to side. I had also removed all the play in the radius rods. Sounds like I need to have slop in the middle to achieve full turn capabilities. I'll try that first. Thanks for the input. Rip

May be that you have adjusted too much of the slop out of the steering. Everything wears a little more around the straight-ahead position than it does near full-lock either way. Try backing off on the adjustment so you have a little slop in the straight-ahead position and see if that helps.

Good point!.. it may be setup to be tight in the middle which may be well worn, and then gets way to tight before either lock is encountered

The sectors timing has a very specific procedure in the fo-4 ( I'm sure you were follwoing it). But you also need to pay attention tot he sector to ballnut timing. Does one side turn farther than the other?
