I tink my tractor starves for fuel??? I can usually run tractor for about an hour before it acts lke that, then it wll only run for a couple of minutes before it stalls. I do have an inline fuel filter. I clean out bowl and not much in there. While I had fuel bowl off I turned on gas and got a steady stream, But when I put fuel bowl back on I turned on gas and I got nothing??? I left assebled and pulled plug on carb and I got a steady trickle to carb?? What could this be. Thought it might be vent on tank??/ But i took cap off tank and tractor ran the same. Any help appreciated 48 8n

Pete..... ...there are 4-common runtime issues with N-Tractors. Check'em out.

1) runs for about 1-minute and quits, restarts about 5-mins; BAD condenser
NOT yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5-mins and stalls out; restarts about 10-mins; CLOGGED fuel filters
NOT yer stated problem, but could be
3) runs for about 15-mins and stalls out; restarts after about 30-min cooldown; GUNKED UP IGNITION SWITCH GUTTZ $10 (cheap)
NOT yer stated problem, but could be 4) runs for about 1-hr and stalls out; restarts after overnite cooldown; Does this sound like yer problem? BAD squarecan ignition coil

Heres the deal, yer ignition coil has insulative tars that melt and short out the wiring and you loose sparkies and yer engine stutters and quits. After overnite cooldown the insulative tars re-insulates the internal coil wires and surprize, yer engine runs again. (for about 1-hour) isn't that amazing? Do I haffta tell you to replace yer less than robust squarecan ignition coil?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Pete..... ....interesting question. The coil heats up from too much amps (current). Everything in the electrical system creates resistance to current. This includes the "infamous ballast resistor" which changes resistance with its internal temperature. Ford's 1939 hi-tech solution to 1939 non-DieHard batterys. More resistance, less amps. Ohm's Law still rules.

My general take is that they are using a lower melting point insulative tar ('cuz it pour eazier during assembly). Like I said, the squarecan frontmount ignition coil is less robust than we'd like 'em to be.

Oh-Oh..... .just gottta brainstorm. You wannna do some shadetree experimenting? Add some "cooling fins" to yer squarecan ignition coil. Waddda concept.

Heres the deal. Find enny old computer, or computer recycle center and gitt an OLD CPU chip with aluminum fin heatsink attached to it. ($5, cheap) It don't haffta work 'cuz yer stealin' the fins to clamp onto your squarecan ignition coil. Cutt-itt to fitt, drill some holes for threading plastic ty-rap it to enny side of the ignition coil that is convienent. Understand? I've done that to an electric motor that was always getting too hot (burnie-burnie). It never gitt past lukewarm now. NO FAN needed, ya got yer big radiator fan ennyways. Understand the concept? E-mail me iff'n you need more specifics..... ....Dell

Dell has a checklist for this. Here it is, taken from his post to Dirk:
"Dirk..... ...there are 4-common runtime issues with frontmount ignition systems. 1) runs for about 1 minute and quits; bad condenser, not yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits; clogged fuel filters, not yer stated problem
3) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; gunked up ignition switch, could be yer problem
4) runs for about 1 hr and quits; melted insulative tars and shorted coil, "cures" itself overnite, could be yer problem

This could be a bad ignition switch, next time it does it put a jumper wire across the switch leads and see if that fixes it.

sounds like trouble with the in-line filter. these tractors have a screen in the tank, one above the glass bowl and another in the carb where the gas line elbow screws in so it really does not need an in-line filter. I'm sure someone else will verify this but I know this is true on my 52 8n
