I posted yesterday about neediing a 6 volt for my 8N. Thanks for all the advice. Called the nearest JD store and they wanted $75.00 so I bought an Exide here in town for $47.00. We'll see. The guy at the tractor store told me I should try an 8 Volt in the 8N and that they worked well. I declined this time since I run lights I was afraid they might burn out. Don't really know too much about electrical stuff but was wondering if you can indeed run an 8 volt? I don't think he was trying to sell me a load of poles as we have been friends since high school.

Dave..... ...yer John Deere guy ain't jerkin' yer chain, he just knows John Deeres better. Many OLD John Deere have a completely DIFFERENT KIND of electrical charging system iff'n they have enny electrics at all. Lotta old tractors have MAGNITOS for ignition and HAND-CRANK for starters. Your low compression 8N has an automobile type electrical system and is NOT designed to charge 8-volt battery.

8-volt batterys were a "band-aide" for higher compression V-8's in the early fiftys start of the horsepower races. The TRANSISTOR RADIO in 1956 was the reason for 12-volt electrical systems. Braggin' rights and un-reliable vacuum-tube radios were the death-knell of 6&8-volts plus 12-volts really turned hi-compression V-8's.

I CURSE General Motors "Boss Kettering" for designing his Cadilac electric starter motor to use the CHEAPEST battery that would turn the engine over for his rich lady customers. But then battery technology in 1912 wasn't DieHard quality eather..... ....Dell

You didn't try to find an Interstate battery? I have 7 tractors that are 6 volt, and everyone of them have an Interstate battery. I don't have any problems, but everything is up to standard too. I'll tell you guys another story that I was once told. Interstate used to have 2 different grades of the six volt group one battery. They discontinued the cheaper one because the cold cranking amps (CCA) did not meet OEM specs for tractor companies. I am not sure what the CCA of an Interstate group 1 is compared to the Exide group 1, but I will find out tomorrow. Oh, the 8 volt battery is a bad idea. It works for some people, but does not solve the problem. If everything is working properly, the 6 volt battery is all you need.

Don't bother with the 8 volt. It's snake oil for poor connections/cables or a worn out starter. The only way you are going to charge it is to tweak the v/r to put out about 9.5v.....and who will you pay to do that? And, I'm told that the new v/r's can't be adjusted. Even if you get it adjusted, what do you think 8v will do to 6v points, coils & condensers? Yes, I'm aware a few folks have no problems; I call them lucky!

You should've tried the 8 volt battery . About 6 yrs ago I went for a new 6 v battery & the lady owner suggested 8v . All I needed to do extra was have the VR tweaked so it returned 8v back to battery . Wow , what a difference . Nice brighter lites & faster starting . Oh ya , I only burnt out 1 headlite in that 6 yrs . Yep , you should've switched to 8 volt . Ken

It's hard to find a shop that will tweak a vr nowadays... that's the biggest issue with going to8v, next is the headlamps, then the points. The points issue can be overcome on a front mount thru using a 12v coil and no resistors..

Can't answer the 8 volt question, but I haven't found a battery yet that 'Batteries Plus' didn't have. Just another possible source for an 'oddball' battery. They can even rebuild cordless battery packs, with higher-capacity cells, for a bit less than buying a new one.

A lot of folks talk about using 8 volt battery to help them start easier, but at the same time they seem to be usually writing in to ask why their coil burned out, or why the battery won't stay charged, stuff like that. I don't think its the answer. Better to just fix whatever is wrong that is preventing the tractor from working with the 6 volts it was designed for.

I tend to agree. My tractor has just been restored (20/20 restoration) but has all new wiring and electrical components. My battery problem is the crap I've been buying at TSC. They won't hold a charge due to bad cells. It will take a charge but won't keep it. When you check with hydrometer no balls floated in any of the cells in a 1 year old battery. I just needed to find a better battery.

I wish I could get some answers about batterys also.I"ve been told that there are only 2 or 3 battery mfg"s left and they make batteries for all and DEKA is one of them? I know The largest Motor cycle group in The world voted DEKA the best.So if anyone knows ??? how many true MFGS there are and who they are I"d like to know
