49 8N. How many years should I expext from a 6v pos ground system battery? And how can I tell if its charging? The Ammeter or goes into the neg. when key is turned on if points allow, but when running only seems to jiggle around zero(middle).
Thanks Rick T.

Check battery voltage before you start the tractor. If 6 volt system, you should get over 6 volts if in good shape. Once tractor is running check voltage again. Voltage will be higher if charging system is working correctly. I have seen anything from 6.4 to 6.9 volts. It depends on your VR and generator. 12 volt system would be the same just higher voltage. There is no good estimate for how long a battery will last. It depends on how good a quality it is, how well the charged was maintained and a lot of other things.

Most of mine lasted at least 5 years, but one lasted 11. I'm due for one now, but as long as I use it once a week it is OK. I think this one is at least 6 years old. I've had the tractor 35 years and it is 6 volt. It always starts, even in upstate NY winters.

ALL good advice. One day in the (maybe not too) distant future, you will be poised to enjoy your unit , and PRESTO, no juice. You can spend waseful time analyzing the problem and end up with the conclusion..... 'dedd battry'. Quick fix----BUY A NEW ONE and don't go cheap. I've got some that are WAAY over the warranty period, like 10 years old....maintaining them with full cells and a regular charge prolongs their life. HPH

Lots of the old meters aren't compensated, and also just jiggle around from vibration.. But basically.. if it stays above 0.. even if it jigles up and down a bit, and the battery never runs down.. you are charging. As Dell mentioned.. might be indicative of a marginal VR.. or slightly worn brushes.. but as with so many things.. I usualy like to leave things alone till they are broke.. rather than braking them myself trying to fix them (grin).

If you have a source of 120-Volt power available, a battery will last for YEARS, if kept you get a "battery maintainer" or "float charger".

(Yes, there are 6-Volt units available.)

Also, add distilled water as needed, so the battery never gets low on electrolyte.

Rattsie..... ...do you really think batterys have an its "time-to-die" clock? Most battery last 1-month longer than pro-rated warrenty. (grin)

Because tractor batterys live in an "un-sprung" world and tractors don't always drive down smooth pavement, they take a physical beating besides electrical abuse from low water and overcharging voltage regulators.

Positive ground, negative ground, don't really effect battery life.

Jiggling ampmeter while tractor is running and genny is supposedly charging could be a bad voltage regulator ($30, cheap) or it could be bad genny brushes. ($5, cheap) or it could just be loose wire someplace (even cheaper)..... ...Dell

I usually get 4 to 5 years out of a battery. My ammeter pretty much jumps around just like yours. If you have doubts about your charging system check it with a meter.

5 years is not common .3 years is more likley.Been buying batteries since 6.95 would buy a new one.
