I have a ford 8n with a front mount distributer I changed it over to 12 volts . I insatted new point , condencer and coil also plug wires but still have a miss under a load . The timing with the point plate ajustment is not very clear . Do you time this with a dawell meter or is their a different method of timing ? I think the timing id off !

Worn bearing in the distributor can cause this problem as well as a worn cam lobe. If you take your distribuator out again, check the point gap on all 4 lobes to make sure it is the same on each. Try to wiggle shaft sideways to check for worn bearing.

You can time a front-mount distributor two ways - by ear while it's still on the tractor, or on the bench as per the FO-4 manual's instructions.

There is a hex-capped, slotted screw on the left side of the distributor. If you back it off a bit, you can slide the screw and the little plate behind it up and down to advance or retard the timing. Run the tractor a bit, cut it off, move the screw, run it again, etc. until it sounds good throughout the rpm range.

That being said, it's not all that difficult to pull the dist. and time it on the work bench. I was able to get my 9n's timing close by ear, but it's a whole lot better after timing it on the bench.
