This article was on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette website.

The area where this school is at is rather rural. It is disappointing to hear that they are putting a stop to this tradition unless there have been some serious safety concerns.

that is just plain bad, i drive my jubilee all over when i feel like it, the rules here are simple, you just climb on and drive, kids a horseback around here are also common, it has got to where citified dudes are trying to make all the rules and most know nothing about tractors[ they think "tractor" is what the guy uses on their lawn]driving tractors or riding horses to school or work is a traditional way of transportation to rural kids, let them do it

Better stop driving cars to school too because thousands of kids are killed every year with them.

I often wonder just what or how much it will take before people decide to wake up and say. Enough!
Or are we doomed to just meekly get into the box cars like the Jews did for Hitler????? ?????

I am still seething over the state of Alabama making it mandatory to have liability insurance on a car before it can be driven. Seems to me they are just making business for the insurance companies and acording to our sacred constitution the highways and byways belong to the public and don't belong to politicians or insurance companies.

Now when do you want me to get in the boxcar????? ?

Surprisingly enough, I can drive my tractor in upstate NY anywhere I please as long as I have a slow moving vehicle sign on it. If there are any laws against it, I am not aware of it. In a practical sense, being a rural area, it would not be a problem even if there were restrictions.

There was a story a while back about this tradition
at one school. The morning that they were supposed
to drive their tractors, one kid had an accident
and was killed. They said then they wouldn"t be
having tractor day no more.
It might have been this same school.

Over zelious cops here in California would probably shoot you if you drove one on there public streets.
If they didnt shoot you you would pay fines for the rest of your life.
California really stinks.

I drive my 9N on the public roads, sometimes.

Must have...according to PA road law:
Tractor license plate.
Current inspection by a "state licensed mechanic". If you can only find one.

turn signals and 4 way flashers.
HORN.

Driver must have driver's license on person.
Bill of Sale for items that were required to fabricate tractor to State requirements must be submitted to apply for PA tractor plate and title.

All of this can be prevented by listing the tractor as "agriculture" and carry a bale of hay on the rear "carry-all", and let an illegal immigrant do the driving. john,PA

Forgot: About insurance.....I recently learned that the "owner" of the tractor must provide 10 million worth of liability insurance (regardless of the STATE's requirement for license plate) just to show off the "parade-queen" at the local parades when I used to donate the use of my 9N and hay wagon for "patriotic floats" and halloween parades. So, after plowing, I just put her away in the shed for preservation before I would loose her to the "POUND".

Justin..... ...sounds like the schools lawyers just got wind of this DANGERIOUS tradition and they are CYA the school from frivolous law suits. Try buying tractor drivers insurance, can't can ya? or underage drivers licenses, can't can ya? The lawyers always win..... ..Dell

Yep, they had an article in Todays "Beaver County Times" about it..:

'TRADITION ENDS:' "Keep your tractors home"

New Sewickley Township police chief: "I cannot risk safety so 15 or 30 kids can drive illegal vehicles"

Thats the news from my end of the state.

Cheifs of Police can give me a real case of heartburn some days. I am a police officer (it subsidizes my farming habit) and I can say that here in north central Washington you would be very hard pressed to find a cop that would object... no accounting for cheifs of police though. I am blessed with a good one, but way way too many are left-wing freaks. It can be really frustrating when they "speak for the Police."
