My steering box is extremely loose, also the arms hit the side of the transmission too. How can this be remedied?

pfusny,
Kelly just gave you the Reader"s Digest version: He covered all the information, but unless you had the box disassembled in front of you it"s tough to visualize what he"s referring to on each point. This is one of them jobs that really require an I&T FO-4 Shop Service Manual. You will have the instructions and an exploded view of all the parts to match to each step. Check the left hand column at the top under Marketplace for Manuals.
There"s a few guys here that were standing in a vacant lot when someone built a tractor shop around them so they went to work. The rest of us take a little longer to catch on.

Pat, I've done a few of these, but must be off the tractor. There is a shaft that is inside the two outside gears with a spacer that seperates the two. Also, there are bearings that look like they came out of the engine that should be renewed. You can shim the pinion gear to go deeper into the side gears providing they are not worn too much letting the side gears go out far enough to clear the trans housing. Ford had different spacers for adjusting the outer gears, but I've used machinery bushings and shims cut from Pepsi cans and they work great, but its a very time consuming process or I don't know what I'm doing.....Kelly.
