Surprised to hear of Ns starting grass fires. I've disced and mowed for years in grasses and volunteer oats higher than the hood with no problem nor heard of one in this area (50 miles north of San Francisco). This is'nt the hottest part of the country and I don't use my 8N on the hottest days. But I'd be interested if anyone has experienced such fire and the circumstances: backfire, faulty exhaust, extremely hot dry weather, overheated engine, etc.

With all the aftermarket cheapie mufflers out there you can bet there are more than a few straight-thru "performance" or "efficient" models that do not have enough baffling to prevent sparks from exiting the tailpipe. If you are using a good-quality reverse-flow muffler you should not have to worry about starting any fires. Of course if there are other problems with the exhaust system ahead of the muffler...

I was mowing with a brush hog one day in dry hay/grass and started smelling smoke. Finally discovered that the Hog was throwing some hay fwd and onto the muffler where it started to smolder. switched to a vertical muffler for my 8N.

I had 3 fires in one day mowing waist high slough grass with the rotary mower first year i bought my place. It would pile up right at the end of the exhaust and start to smolder. Caught it early each time, but if one were not attentive, i could see it getting big fast!

Not that hard to get a fire going in very dry fall conditions when bush hogging something like sage grass. I have also heard of people raking hay with them and getting a fire going.

I think I have seen more fires when cutting hay from the mower hitting a rock. Fellow set my place on fire twice the same day cutting with a rotary mower a few years back.
