Here's a real dumb question - I took my starter out, got a rebuilt with the drive assy. from this site. What's the secret to re-installing this thing w/o moving/removing the oil filter cannister? I have been fighting with this thing all afternoon. Don't wanna damage anything, but man, this can't be this hard! (It wasn't easy removing it either) hehehe

Thanks to all who responded. I didn't remove any of the bell housing opening, but I did remove the oil filter bolts and wiggled it past there to get it in the opening. As a further note, the "new" starter flange for the opening is a tad larger than the old one and it took much praying and torqing of the starter bolts to seat the starter in the hole. Next time, I will grind the opening just a bit, but I'm hoping that won't be for another 50 years or so. (o:

Some trim the bellhousing opening at the 2oclock position as if you are looking into the opening.. however, removing the oil filter boltsd will allow it to flex a little, and I have even removed the block drain petcock and jabbed a wad of bubble gum over the hole for the 10 seconds it takes to wiggle the starter in.. just imagine where the flywheel is, and remember that the drive has to get past it..

The original starter drives would kick out when
the engine fired. The later drives would not kick
out until engine reached 600 ?? Rpm. They were a
bit larger diameter. As a Ford dealer we had a
spec jig to trim out a corner of the Hsg. With a
little imagination you can find the spot to grind
out with a grinder on a drill or??. Then it will
go easier ea time. Makes it worse if you spin the
starter up before it is installed-drive stays out
until reaching the RPM. Chuck

Without a picture I'm going to guess that you got a different drive than the one on the old starter? Some Bell housing openings have been enlarged to accept the new or larger drives.

Good luck. I feel a whole lot of wiggling coming on!

If you remove the bolts from the filter mounting bracket this will allow the filter to be raised some.Maybe enough to be out of your way without disconnecting anything.
