Hey guys,
I just picked up a '51 8N; has a little bit of surface rust, but starts fine and runs well. I used it with the bushhog for about an hour last weekend, and I am pretty impressed with the way it tears through honeysuckle that can stop my riding lawmower in its tracks. Here's a couple of things that concerned me, but being a novice I don't know what to think about them.
(1) After it's run for half an hour or so (good and warmed up) the gears make a grinding noise when you engage them, and it seems as if the clutch isn't fully disengaging. No problem at all when it's cold. The previous owner told me it would do this.
(2) Starts easily when cold (I tried this a few times last weekend) but once it's warmed up, if you turn it off it doesn't seem to crank fast enough to get it started. Still has the 6-volt battery, is this a common problem?
Thanks!
Andy

'Bama Andy,

Clean, bright and tight on the electrical cables.

Also you might want to try an oil additive like Slick-50. If your engine is getting a little tight when hot, this might help. I have the 6 volt system and it helped mine turn over faster.

Have fun

I'll bet that the grinding noise once nice a warm is nothing. What happens is that the trains oil gets hot and thin. The gears can turn easy. When you step on the clutch they conrinue to turn for a few seconds, maybe 5. When it's cold the oil is thick and when you step on the clutch they stop turning almost instantly. When you try putting it into gear with the gears still turning you get the grinding. Try depressing the clutch when standing still and waiting a few seconds before trying to shift into gear. If that stops the grinding fine. If not you could have other problems with the clutch.

"My toy" also grinds gears on occasion. What I do is to let up on the clutch, wait a second or two and try it again. More times than not, works fine.

Hi Andy,

I would check to be sure all your electrical connections are clean and tight. Also make sure you have a big cable (something like '0' gauge) from the negative battery terminal to the starter solenoid. Sounds like the clutch needs adjusting, but it also sounds like there may be other problems like an oil leak that gets to the clutch.
Hope this helps.

N - joy.
