I just bought a 1952 8N (at least I am told that is the model year), which seems to run pretty well. Six volt system, engine starts and doesn"t seem to smoke. A few small oil leaks here and there, but nothing major, it appears. Engine sounds good, and transmission feels ok. I am pretty inexperienced, since I grew up and left the farm over 40 years ago, and we had an allis chalmers CA back in those days. I have no reliable information on how this tractor has been maintained, other than that is was repainted unprofessionally sometime in the recent past. All the sparkplugs, wires, etc., are painted red. Before I start using this 8N, I"d like some advise about what minimum maintainence I should do and what kind of parts, filters, coolant, oil, lubricants, etc., are available and recommended for routine maintenance on a tractor this old. Eventually, when I can retire, I"d want to do more restoration, just to keep it in good running condition as long a possible. Also, my property is a little over 100 acres of north Texas hills, rocks, mesquite, cactus, wildflowers, post oaks, cedars, and native grass pastures. Will be doing routine trail maintenance and periodic mowing of pastures and meadows. Worried about tire punctures from thorns, and wonder what is recommended to stop leaks. Thanks for helping a newbie.

I just want to say thanks to all of the good folks who took the time to share their experience and knowledge with me. This is a great message board and the "N" folks are a great bunch of people. Owen...welcome(back?)to north Texas! Sounds like we've got about the same terrain as you do. Our tractors have slime in most of the fronts, but haven't had much trouble w/ rears. They all have tubes, of course, so if I ever have a flat I just put some slime in & air back up. Good idea to keep a compressor & portable tank around.

What town is your place closest to?

Thanks for the reply. However, heaven does come with a lot of cactus and mesquite thorns, not to mention a few sharp edged rocks. I've got a 1997 F-150 that I bought new with all of 18K miles on it now, but I've already replaced two tires and fixed all of them at least twice. Almost impossible to avoid sharp objects when off road around my neck of the woods. I'm looking forward to getting some of the stuff mowed down, but I know I'm in for a few flats along the way.

Boy, do I ever know what you mean! I lived in Texas for 15 years, between Fort Worth and Waco, and I gave up getting tires with "great warranties" because I kept putting mesquite thorns through the sidewall. Still, it's awfully pretty with the wildflowers scattered across the stones and a mockingbird singing its heart out. Best wishes as you "settle in" on your new place! :-) --Dawn

ALL of the off-road tires on MY place except the rear ag-bar tires are SOLID filled with foam. NO more flats for me.

Owen..... ...welp, even un-professionally applied paint is better'n rust sez Dell the 20/20 painter. (looks good at 20ft or 20mph).

As fer yer "thorny problem". Some people use "slime" as an inside the tire "sealant". 8N's came with two sizes of TUBE frontires; skinny 4-19 or HD 6-16 with appropriate matching 6-bolt small-hub rims. Steel-belted thick-tread tubeless tires are semi-puncture proof but rims leak air due to rivet construction. So? just install tubes inside of tube-less tires. (26psi) Simple, eh? Investigate use 19" motorcycle tires for 19" rims.

As for your rear ag-bar 10-28/11.2-28 tractor tires. Many are weight ballasted with corrosive calcium chloride water for added traction when plowing. It should be intuitively obvious, leaky corrosive water can quickly destroy your rear-rims. Just drain the water. Many techniques are posted in the archives of this great N-Board, do a search at the top of the page. Simple, eh?

One last option to "thorn-proof" yer tires is "liners" from outfits like Gemplers. Do a web-search.

I would get a manual. Do and oil and filter change, tune up with solid copper core wires and Autolite 437 spark plugs. Clean the fuel screens (3) and get a 5 gal pail of 90 wt Mineral or NH Multi G 134 for the diff,trans,hyd (1 sump)too.

At least that way you know where you are starting from.

Welcome aboard. Get yourself a I&T FO-4 manual available from the fine site sponsores at 'MANUALS' at the top of this page or at your local TSC or other tractor parts emporiums. Even available online. Get the 2000 edition w/ 152 pages and a parts breakout in the back. Some of the older versions are less complete. Well worth the price. Steve

Change the engine oil and filter, and trans fluid. Possibly do a tune up and then just enjoy your n. As far as flats are concerned I don't know of any thing short of steel wheels that will handle thorns.
