It is finally time to repair the hydraulics on my 8N. The dealer quoted prices on two repair pistons and rings. The first option was for three steel rings (similar to engine pistons) and the second was for a piston with a single O-ring. Both were supposed to be versions of the newer NAA piston/ring assembly. Does the 3-ring steel version seal better?

Dell's got it right. I did mine with a new piston and the O ring back last summer. Mine will hold up a heavy planter for days if I let it. I also cleaned my fluid reservoir and replaced the relief valve. You just wouldn't belive how much gook will collect over time in there that can foul up your hydraulics.

AL in PA: Definitely go for the newer NAA piston and o-ring. The piston, o-ring, and leather back-up washer are cheap. If your cylinder is scored bad and can't be honed out, you may need to replace it too. When I did mine a couple of years ago, I replaced the cylinder, piston, and used the o-ring setup. Also be sure to check your pressure relief valve while you're in there. Good luck. GA Jim

Thanks. I knew that people here have spoken highly about the o-ring configuration, but I don't remember any comments about the 3-ring configuration.

Take your old piston to a hydraulic repair shop. They will turn it for and furnish a new "O" ring and backup washer. Use as many of the old steel rings as you can - the shops usually leave 2 grooves. The "O" ring will seal much better than the steel ever did. Having your old piston turned is usually cheaper too.

Jerry..... ...donnno where yer gittin yer hydraulic piston turned, but ain't no shop I know will NOT even turn their lathe on for less than $50.

Buying the all ready made interchangeable and IMPROVED NAA hydraulic 3-point lift piston to replace the 3-ring hydraulic piston, one on-line vendor quotes ($17.50, cheap) "NAA 530-B Piston (Hydraulic Lift)[One Groove] Requires "O" Ring NAA 533A And NAA 473A Washer 1939-54 $17.50"..... ...respectfully, Dell
