49 8N. Where can I get the two part squeezum axle nut to replace the existing single locking one that just does not seem to stay tight? I have tightened both at least 450 pounds tourque, and one is dry and tight but the other always comes loose and oily. I had both seals replaced by the FNH dealer when they did the brakes last spring.(2005) Will the dealer carry such part? Or is it an auto parts store?
Thanks Rick T.

Here is my $.02 for all it is worth. I have used both, and extensively repaired a few loose axles. Once a new hub and new axle is correcly tightened to 450 lbs - you are set for decades unless you have to remove the hub to fix the oil seals or something like that. Most time, the hubs are not tightened again correctly, and wear begins. Now, once the threads are worn so a regular OEM nut will not torque down to 450 lbs, some turn to the two part repair nut as a TEMPORARY fix until winter or another down time. You ask why they would sell them if they didn't work - two reasons: 1. It is designed as a temporary fix and 2. Because there are people who buy them expecting a quick fix. Not a flame - I did the same thing. Just be aware that the true fix is to quickly replace your worn hub and/or rear axle. Seems expensive ($50 for the hub and $100 for the axle), but doing the job two or three times because you didn't fix it right the first time adds up quickly also.

I say replace the hub(s), AND axle(s) if any sign of wear exists on the axle splines as well. They also now have new OEM looking axle nuts with the locking ring that are WIDER than the stock size - so the contact more threads and strip the axle threads less. Tighten to 450 lbs, drive for about 30 minutes and tighten again (it will tighten more once you drive on it). Keep tightening periodically for a week of use or more until you go to tighten it and it does not budge - then put the locking wire in place. Oh and also - DO NOT try to torque the two part repair nut to 450 lbs, or you will see just how smooth those worn axle threads can get.

Good luck,
Dan

This wasn"t mentioned but I have to ask.
You do have the wire locking mechanism installed on the nut, right?

I agree with Hobo....Your problem is a worn hub which costs $56. You will end up screwing up your axle which costs $120. I have bought a dozen hubs in my limited experience with Fords. It was a design flaw to expect a tapered spline hub of such a small diameter to counteract a tire size of such as this. I think every 8N and Jubilee in the world has worn hubs after a dozen years! The 9N rear end was a better design even as well as the later 600's , 800's, which saw the problem and fixed it. If you don't replace the hub soon it will move inward with retightening until it rubs on the brake springs.

Gonna tell ya I would not use a two part squeezum axle nut if my life depened on it. it’s a Band-Aid to fix a worn hub and money thrown away. Theirs a reason yer OEM nut will not stay tight, worn hub or axle. If the threads are messed up you will never git the squeezum nut to tighten no better then the OEM nut it just kin not be done theis not enough shouler on the nut to allow 450 feet lbs of torque. If you will back the nut off you most likely will see the nut bottoms out on the axle spline before it kin tighten the hub. Same thing will happen with the squeezem nut.

Yes I have the retaining clip in the nut. If the hub is worn, why couldn't I use washers to shim it out then? I know I have tightened it to at least 450 pounds, 3ft pipe wrench 5 ft cheater pipe/bar and 155 pounds on the end. If the two part squeezum nut is a bad idea, then why sell em? Is it just a band aid or can it be used in place of the original nut as it's stated purpose? Respectfully,Rick T.
Thanks for the input.

Sorry but washers will not help either. If the axle or splines are worn you loose the interferance fit needed to lock'em in place. If it makes ya feel better then use the squezzz nut. Zane has a fix fer the worn hubs start a new post and ask'em i do not have it saved.

Isnt that little wire snap ring thing supposed to keep the nut from coming loose? Guess I got lucky with both of my 8N tractors. Both had at least one loose hub that was also leaking. But after I put a wrench and 4-foot bar on them they got tight. The 49 is still tight almost 10-months later. Of course I have done very little heavy pulling with it, just grading the driveway and running a backhoe mostly. The 52 has only been here a week, and only had one loose hub. The wire snap ring was missing. I got about one full turn on it before it snugged up to spec.

Ratzie..... ...would you believe our BBS host, Yesterdays Tractors sell it? $21.98 (cheap)

Axle Clamp Lock Nut - Clamp lock nut, rear axle, 1-1\4". For 8N, NAA, Jubilee. This improved nut helps to prevent premature wear on both axle and hub. (The ring on the original type can fall out or rust out which allows the nut to come loose). This nut stays tight! Replaces CBPN-4179-A and 8N4187. (Part No: LN10-21)

They also make a smaller squeezem nut for frontaxles too..... ..Dell
