Guys, well been driving it (9N) since I changed the key switch and put the ceramic ballist resistor in place. Tractor runs somewhat okay and doesn't die anymore. Also cleaned the fuel lines..... ...
But I seem to feel it is not running as smoothly as it should. It seems to sputter abit. Could it be the ceramic resistor? Or could it be that I fried the coil before I attached the ceramic resistor? Any ideas why it seems to sputter a bit and seems to want to die if I reduce the throttle too quickly..... . at idle it barely stays running. Why would a linkage adjustment now be in order when nothing else has changed. I have the shop manual. Could you please give me your carb adjustment procedure?

Ron..... ...Check yer sparkies for a full 3/16" gap jump by bending enny ol'sparkie side electrode out wide. Now clamp the metal shell to enny metal bracket you can find. (sparkplug wire tube?) Now plug enny sparkie wire to the top of yer calibrated sparkie tester, turn yer ignition switch ON and crank the engine (don't worry iff'n it starts) WATCH THE TESTER GAP for bright blue sparkies or wimpy yellowish-orangish wimps.

As fer yer carb adjust, much to the dismay of the govt'l environmental bureaucrats every carb MUST be adjusted for the engine it is mounted on. (that is why they all have handy-dandy tweek'ems) And adjusting the carb is the LAST THING a tune-up mechanic does 'cuz iff'n the sparkies ain't strong enuff, all the carb tweeks won't fixx'em.

BOTH Ford and Marvel/Schembler say to adjust the side-pointing idlemix and down-pointing mainjet to 1-turn as a starting point. I adjust the down-pointing mainjet to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT!!!

I then adjust the side-pointing idlemix for maximum idle-rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, maximum idle-rpms. Understand? I then adjust the behind the carb idlespeed for a sloooow 400rpms idlespeed. (ennythang under 500rpms is probably close-enuff) I do the idlemix adjust 3-times before I'm satified. My idlemix usually ends up about 3/8 turn, your will be different.

Remember, the side-pointing idlemix is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean, IN for ENRICH. ..... .Dell

Check the spark. If you think the coil is damaged.. look for a big blue 3/16 spark.

Have you checked the compression? specifically a wet vs dry test.. this will give you an idea of rings.. but more importantly.. valves. if you have lots of popping.. you might have valve issues.

You may also have a too rich main jet if it tries to stall when throttling down.
