Okay, got new points, condensor, and plug wires.

Does the hood and radiator have to be taken off to change out the points and condensor? Or can I just get to it all from the side?

Anything I need to be aware of so I dont mess it up?

If it's a front mount distributor which I'm guessing it is from your question you take it out to work on it. Don't be skeered 'cause it's easy..... ....and goes back in easy too. I just flip the bail(wire that goes over the coil to hold it on) down. Then I sit the coil up out of the way somewhere over by the generator or you can disconnect the single wire to it and remove it completely if you prefer. Then just flip the clips that hold the distributor cap and move it out of your way. Check the gaskets on top of the cap where the coil goes and in the groove of the cap around the outside. If they're damaged or missing replace them and save yourself problems in wet weather or if you decide to wash the tractor. Now simply remove the rotor from the center shaft, remove the two bolts holding the sides of the distributor to the block and you'll have the distributor with the points and condenser in your hand. There may be a round cover over the points and condenser. It just lifts out of the distributor. Replace the points and condenser and with the points on one of the four cam lobes of the distributor so they're open carefully gap them to .015 inch. Reassemble the tractor the opposite of how it came apart making sure that when you install the distributor in the front of the engine that the offset tang on the back of the distributor drops into the slot in the front of the drive plate. It will only fit in flat one way so you can't screw up the timing or put it in wrong. If the distributor doesn't drop in flat against the block just turn the shaft or rotor until it does. Check the rotor and cap for cracks or excessive wear on the contacts and replace them if necessary. Make sure that the gaskets are in place in the distributor over the points and condenser, on the cap and top of the cap where the coil sits when you re-install them and you'll be able to power wash the front of the engine without getting the distributor wet inside and causing it not to run.

Good Luck, I hope it goes well, Lee

Assuming a front mount distributor simply unbolt it from the engine and take it to the bench. Only installs one way - no timing needed.

The short answer is NO, you do not have to remove the hood and radiator to change the points. However; if you want some good tips and advice, you really need to tell us what tractor you have and if it is a front or side mount distributor...

As Dell would say - we flunked mind reading, just ask... er, nevermind the rest.
