Tranny, not clutch problems

I've got a '52 8N. Several months ago, I went to get on it and take off, and it didn't seem to have any clutch. Since I'd put a loader on it, it was kind of a big deal to split it, and I just got around to it yesterday. When I got it apart, all the clutch components look good. I assume that I have a broken shaft in the tranny somewhere, but I was wondering where to go from here, and hoping someone might have had a similar experience. Thanks.
Paul

You don't have a Sherman, Hupp or other auxiliary transmission in the tractor by any chance ??? My Sherman gave me a scare shortly after I got the tractor and got bumped into neutral while I was brush hogging. I thought I'd lost the clutch for a little while but realized what the problem was before I started walking for the house.
Good Luck, Lee

No, just a standard tranny. I tried turning the input shaft by hand last night, and it seemed to turn freely in neutral, but in the other two gears I tried, fourth and first, it moved about a half a revolution freely, then no more, but it was the same for each gear...

Now I'm confused. Are you saying that when the transmission is in any gear except neutral the transmission won't turn ??

It'll turn a ways without resistance, and I figure, or hope, that if I put a wrench to it, it would start to move the wheels and all, I'm thinking there is just some slop in there before I start engaging the differential, but I found it curious that I am getting the same amount slop in each gear, I'd think one gear would have more teeth, making me feel resistance earlier, making me wonder if it's just a knarled mess in the tranny, but I'm getting ahead of myself, I guess I should just dive in and see...thanks again.

After it is split is not a good time to figure out what is not working. Are you sure that the hub of the clutch disc is not turning in the middle? The rivets sometimes let loose and this is the symptom.

About the only thing that I can think of that might be connected to a transmission problem is maybe the drive coupling between the transmission and the differential pinion shaft is broken.

Before you go any further you should put the transmisson in fourth gear and turn the input shaft with a pair of big vice grips. If it tries to move it is not the transmisson but the clutch disc probably.

If it does not try to move you should remove the right side lift housing inspection plate and see if the coupling is turning the pinion shaft. If it is then there could be somethink broken in the differental such as the rivets broken that held the ring gear to the differential carrier.
