I got a front-mount 8N earlier in the spring. The day after I got it home the rear-end went out. I got new oil, filter, plugs, points, cap, rotor, condensor, and wires to give it a good tune up while waiting to find time to fix the rear-end. Before I could tune it up the starter drive went out. Now last night, I noticed that at some point the coil boiled over (pretty sure I never left the key switch on) and now I have to get a new one. Please tell me that these 8Ns aren"t always THIS MUCH TROUBLE! (If it makes it past this summer I think I"ll have to name it Lucky because anyone else would have parted it out by then)

Yup, I'm on my third coil. I think I've finally learned to triple check the thing.

I bought mine- money was very tight, shopped carefully. Mine was advertised as rebuilt engine (this is late 2005 mind you) it was far away. I was pretty excited and overlooked some things that were wrong as the price seemed ok, the guy seemed ok, and he offered to trailer it an hour and a half as part of our deal.
As he's unloading it, I'm looking at it with fresh eyes, and asked ..... ."ah, when did you rebuild the engine exactly?"

1998....what the hell?!?!?? Yet the first line in the add was 8N rebuilt engine..
live and learn-
But, like has been said, stick it out, you'll get it finally to where you want it, and learn a ton in the mean time

What's wrong with the rear end? I will start parting out an 8N in earnest soon.

Sorry you are having problems. The thing is like everyone said below. These things are pretty old and a lot of them have been sitting around unused or improperly maintained for years and then we get hold of them. There is just a number of things that have to be done when we pick one up to get the maintenance up to where it should have been all along.

The good thing is though that they are so simple even I can work on one and that is saying a lot. Try working on some of the newer things and you just turn for the checkbook and a trailer to haul it somewhere.

Holy Pete, Pete what a time you had...but look on the bright side, as soon as you get her rear fixed you should have 50 trouble free years with your tractor!

I can't get back in the house or lock the pole barn up without the keys. Maybe tie a string to the fuel shut off and the key. You remeber to turn the gas off right? :)

Take heart. Sometimes it takes a while to get everything straightened out but once you go through one and correct someone elses sins and repair what's wore out they run for a long time without much work..... .or at least that's been my experience in the 25 or 30 years that I've been using Ns.
Good Luck, Lee

Pete - Believe me, I feel your pain. I bought a '52 8N early this spring and so far, I have replaced the entire wiring harness, voltage regulator, coil, plugs, points, condenser, plug wires, starter and drive, relief valve on the hydro unit, stay arms, drawbar, sediment bulb assembly, work light, rear fender mount, ignition switch, and starter button. Now, though when I hit the starter, he fires right up and runs like a champ. The hydraulics work, and I am in the process of restoring the Dearborn 2X plow I bought. If you need to run the tractor, I agree it's frustrating when it doesn't go your way, but these tractors are approaching 60 and I only hope I can run this well in a couple of years when I hit that age. Too bad we can't just give our old bodies a tune up and be good for several more years. (o:

Happy "N" ing.

Wes

I now you are frustrated. It may have all these problems, BUT,you can fix them by yourself, for the most part. Not much of the new stuff is like that. Don't get discourged. Most of us have been there. I have a '54 Ferguson TO-30 that I have sunk a total of almost $2500 (over the purchase price) into over 10 years. It is a reliable, working machine on our ranch. It hauls the pipe trailer, runs the sprayer, drags the pastures, plows the snow, moves the salt boxes, etc. (I have a Ford 4610 that does the heavy lifting.)
Get the manuals and get cracking. You have a great resource of experience in this forum to help you. Good Luck.

I hear ya Pete. I felt the same way. Seems like with cars-some people can buy them and never have to do anything but change the oil and put in gas. And then you have the me's and you's. If it has a motor and wheels it will always be something. I have gotten frustrated with the N many times. Keep thinking that sooner or later everything will have to be right, but we are dealing with almost 60 year old machines with alot of use over the years. I have got so much money in mine that when something breaks I think-fix it and spend more money on a machine that I already have 4 times in it than I paid or take the loss and get something newer. Fixing is still cheaper than having payments-but in the long run payments may not have been that bad. Then you also have the side that enjoys the tearing it down and fixing. Aggrivating if you are needing to work the tractor but still the comfort of the repair being out in the barn alone and peaceful. Yes alone - have ya ever noticed how all ya neighbors and friends wants to use or the use of your tractor when it is running but let it break and nobody don't remember you having a tractor. Kindda good then. Hopefully you will finially get "Lucky II" mine is "Lucky I" going and she will give you a great running season. Good luck.

I know what you mean, sometimes it feels like it is one thing after another with these things. Some say that is the fun of it. I wouldn't mind it so much if I had another tractor to fall back on. Then again, fixing almost anything on these tractors yourself is cheaper than than one payment on a new one. Good luck

remember these machines are 50+ years old and will need to be worked on sometimes. they can be a pleasure to own and work. mine ran good til about two years ago when I had problems with it, I finally got it running right this year and have enjoyed working it, just cannot get enough seat time.lol

After one or two more incidents of toasting the coil, you'll learn to be sure to shut the key "OFF"!

Is this your first machine with breaker points????
