This site sponsor shows two Starter drives for sale;

Starter Drive - New-starter drive, for 9N, 2N, 8N (1939 to 1952). (Part No: 52-11350C) $36.75 Starter Drive - Original Style For 8N, 2N, 9N (Part No: R2325) $30.30

The price difference does not matter to me. Which is better?

Paul..... ..even the "original style" is NOT original. It needs a new starter retaining pin hole drilled about 1/2" closer to the armature windings.

Me? iff'n I ever haffta replace my starter drive again, its gonnna be the "clutch" style. Why? 'cuz the clutch don't kick-out when the engine koffs during a hard-start situation.

No matter which one you buy, remember ALL starter drives must be squeekie clean. Why? 'cuz oil gumms up and slows down the extension screw and causes starter grinding..... ..Dell

Dell,
Saw your response to Paul on the different style starters for the 8N. I'm trying to figure out how to test the starter to see if it needs to be replaced. I can replace the brushes, etc. but don't know how to tell if the spring and gear assembly (I guess that is the bendix?) is OK or is functioning as it should. How can you tell?
