I had/have a leak at the front of the oil pan on my 8N. I removed the oilpan (the front bolts were finger tight at most) so I thought I would just replace the gasket. Making sure to have clean surfaces for mating.

Got it all back together and just cranked the engine over a few times and let it set for a day.
I came back and I saw some oil at the front of the tractor on the floor. I can see it dripping.

How can I replace the rope seal above and below the crankshaft w/o tearing the whole engine apart? Could I just loosen the crankshaft bolts and replace the packing?

I really need help w/this.

Pat..... ....heres what I'd do. Replace yer crankshaft front rope seals with this "better" 1-piece neoprine crankshaft seal. You don't haffta drop yer crankshaft but you will haffta remove yer frontaxle so you can drop the oilpan 'cuz it is held on to the front of the oilpan. The I&T FO-4 has pictures and instructions on how to do it. $27 (cheap)

NAPA 40x62x11 seal p/n: 550199 ($15, cheap)
David O (do a search for more info) discovered this improved seal from the flathead V-8 boys at Reds Headers, 'cuz our N-Engine is rummored to be 1/2 flathead V-8..... ...Dell

To get to the front top oil seal, you"ll need to pull the crankshaft pulley. I think one of the manuals says it"s possible to replace the seal without removing the pulley. It might be possible, but I couldn"t do it. I did do a fine job of mangling a seal and had to buy another.

The crankshaft does have to be pulled to get to the top rear seal. If you don"t have a problem with it leaking, I wouldn"t worry about it.
