Thermostat substitutions?...

Low and behold when I pulled off the upper radiator hose, there was no thermostat in my tractor.

Since the local tractor store carries eveything for 8ns except thermostats because they say they are more trouble than they are worth, can I not get an automotive thermostat which is interchangeable?

Is there nothing out there at Advance Auto which is a good substitution?... (specific diameter to fit in hose and at the same operating temp)

Or will I just end up having to order one over the internet?

You really do need to run a thermostat. Otherwise, the engine runs too cool & heats unevenly; you get water build up in the oil. Not a good thing. I'm not aware of any automotive T-stat that will substitute, so ordering one off the Internet is the way to go. OEM is 160*; some folks like a 180* T-stat to get the operating temp up a bit higher. Remember, pointy-end toward the radiator.

Has anyone tried NAPA. They carry alot of N parts... generator, starter, coil, etc.

If that engine was used in other applications.. I'd think the t-stat may cross.

The flathead V-8's had two upper radiator hoses, and used similar thermostats.

I'll see if I can find a reference as to the hose size on the V-8's.

Bob..... .....my book on building Flathead V-8's shows the removable cylinderhead water outlet elbows with a ringed space for disc type thermostat. With the comment "180F Chevy smallblock" thermostats also fit. This implies that the OEM flathead thermostat is 160F..... ....Dell

Dell, you are describing the later flathead. The early ones had the water hoses connect in the middle of the head.

Dell, The older Ford flathead V-8's had outlet nipples facing upward from the center of each head, which were NOT removable like the newer bolt-on outlets more near the front of each head.

Apparently, they changed the fitting after 1948.

The ones with the center nipple used a thermostat like an "N"'s, although I still haven't found a verifaction of the size.

The ford V8 used in hose thermostats 1933 to 36 only. The hose ID was 1 3/4.Use a thermostat from an 8N supplier.Running without a thermostat is dumb....
