My brother has a 2N and wants to paint it to its orignal color. With all the grays out there, he wants to know what brand and color name is the closest to the orignal?

Paula..... .to me dark grey is dark grey is dark grey and only matters if'n you're trying to match color on the same tractor when you're replacing/repairing parts. Otherwize just lie, and say the color faded (grin).

I say, its your brothers tractor and he can paint it any color he wants. I've always thought Candy Apple Red with yellow flame along the hood would be a nice effect. Hummnn...do they make Candy Apple Grey???

Remember the most important part of painting is the preparation before painting, not the color of the paint..... ..Dell

As yuou can see from all these opinions, nobody really knows. I painted mine with Rustoleum "Smoke Grey" Industrial paint. It is really close to the parts I found hidden on the tractor that would not have been faded by 60 years of sun.

I know Rustoleum isn't Imron quality, but I have a tracor I use, not a trailer queen. I love thos tractors, but I use mine daily.

The advantage of using Rustoleum is that they make matching spray cans. When I bought ne lift arms last week, I hung em in the barn, spray painted them, and next day they went on color matched.

If I ding up the lug nuts taking of a wheel, a touch-up is no big deal. One thing though....rustoleum takes a week to get to it's full hardness, you need to keep this in mind.

Take Care
Steve

Steve-I used the Rustoleum also; it's pretty close and I think it looks pretty good. I use my tractor; the carry-all is on it a lot, it gets muddy and dirty but I clean it up when I take it to a show, pull or parade. I really think that that Rustoleum is a pretty close match and the color consistency is good. Nice tractor--looks like my tractor's twin!

I remember my grandfather's 2N that he got new in 46 or 47. I remember it as being a darker gray than what we see today with somewhat of a bluish tinge to it. As to the right paint to use, read what these guys say, try to find the Pripps book and make your choice. I'm not big on painting them any way you want to but neither am I one of those people that the JD folks refer to as the "correct police." I think you should come as close as you can, keeping in mind that you are doing this 55 years after the fact. If you come close, it'll look fine. Enjoy what you are doing and be proud of your tractor. It will work for you, give you lots of fun and don't overlook it's therapeutic value.

Color looks good to me. But I want to know how he did it in 3 months. It's taking me 3 years....
I figured it out! he only had one color to worry with.

when I look back at that project just starting about year ago now, i wonder the same thing. but then again, i dropped everything i was doing to focus on that during my weekends, mornings, and evenings. I took some days-off as well and stretched those days to make long weekends. I mean, there were numerous days when I was up at 4:30AM working on it. yard chores stacked up, one lady down the road had the nerve to tell me: "I want you to clean up the mess in your yard" and that was my introduction to her. Nonetheless, she still drives and jogs by our place and will not look up and over or say hi. She has perfected the human scowl. Little did she know that this spring my plans were to do the same to the 850, but that was really a glorified re-paint and strip, blast and overhaul the sheet metal. Back to the 9N; i was on a mission to complete it before western fire season, and before we started to dive into excavators, pouring foundations and constructing buildings. It was really my window of opportuntiy to do it now, or wait 10 years. I'll tellya, being stubborn and focused sometimes pays off, although it pisses the lady off down the road. -9N'er

I saw a 9N at a show painted Martin Senour #6019 Ford Gray, and it looked real sharp. I also saw several tractors in the Peterson Ford book wore that paint. In theory the 9N and 2N wear the same color, although as bg said the paint would have yearly, or seasonal variation. Just don't paint it 8N gray.

Good Luck!
