I have a 9n with no oil filter. The engine serial no begins with 8n so it may be an 8n engine I'm not sure. I know where to pick up the pressure point at the right rear of the engine, and that this line goes to the side of the filtr. I need to know where the line out the bottom of the filter connects. This is and early engine with the front distributor and the exit line does not go to the governor for extra oiling. Please let me know if anyone has this information. Thanks, Rod

Rod...regardless of which tractor you have,9n or 8n,you need an oil filter. You say your serial number begins with an 8n,this tells me you have an 8n engine. The oil filter should be mounted on the left side of the engine head, the holes should already be there. The oil line[2n18666] that comes out the bottom of the filter goes in front of the engine and to the governor housing.I would think since they changed the engine, the gov. was changed also cause the 9n gov. will not work on the 8n. don b

Rod..... .theres a reason why Ford changed their oil-filter return from into the block below the oil-filter and it is NOW returned thru the governor cup. And that is probably the reason yer frontmount 8N block don't have a return thru the original 9N governor's cup. New governors cup $90 (cheap) includes oildrain and PROOFMETER drive access. Sucha bargan.

As fer yer missing oilfilter, while you can "find" use N-oilfilter canistors, sometimes it is eazier to buy a PH-8A spin-on oilfilter adaptor, fabricate an adaptor bracket. ($25, cheap) Very common. Still haffta drain-it thru the governor cup..... .....Dell

Better yet, get a "filter head" and filter DESIGNED for bypass use.

The PH-8A filter and a "head", designed for "full-flow use, will flow too much oil, and drop the engine's oil pressure without the restrictive oriface that is present in the original cartridge filter housing.

If you should decide to go to a spin-on filter, get a WIX "head", # 24755. It will have 1/8" female pipe tappings, just the thing for the brass fittings already used with the existing filter, and each replacement cartridge has a tiny, built-in flow restrictor DESIGNED for this bypass use.

There are three filters that fit that head, WIX #'s 51320, 51051, and 51050, listed in order of larger physical size.

This "head" and filters are marketed just for these conversions.

NAPA, or others likely have these parts under their own numbers.

Yes, the PH8A WILL work, but a flow restrictor WILL be needed, as the filter, and the "heads" sold for use with it are generally all designed for FULL FLOW use.

With the correct filters, designed for bypass use, that is all done for you!

Also, the filter media is different in the filters designed for bypass use (will catch smaller particles).

And, it's not MY thinking, the setup is prominently shown in the WIX Master Catalog, "For Small Gas and Diesel Bypass Filter Conversion From Cartridge To Spin-on Use".

I have used several over the years, and have one "on the shelf" for a project I have going.

I'll post a picture tommorrow night. (If I don't forget!)

Come to think of it, I HAVE posted a scan of the catalog photo, and it's still on the server:

They also make a similar setup for "LARGE" gas and diesel engines. (Think up to around 1000 CID!)
