How the heck can some folks take advantage of an old man?

My father had an 'extra' 8N, he wanted to get rid of it he gave me a price and the deal was done. Well, my dad is 80 and is getting along in years and doesn't always think the way he used to. The word was out that he had a 8N for sale, but not that I had bought it. Some clown offered him $650 cash and 'bought it' without seeing it. Deal of the year! This is a great tractor...complete engine overhaul last year, great tin, clean, no smoke, good hydraulics and everything else. When my dad told me this I had a stroke, almost. Turns out this guy who 'bought it' told his friends how he 'took the old man to town'. I was really bent out of shape at this point. In the end things worked out well...this guy came to my barn to pick up the 8N and I was there, I just said hello and let him do the talking...he looked it over and looked for the key his buddy was smiling all the time. He asked me a few times for the key and I ignored him, he started to get a little demanding. I handed him an envelope with a money order for $650 and told him there was no sale, he got nasty, I told him he was on private property and that I owned the tractor and that the sale was made in error. He got foul mouthed and told me what he was going to do to me and so on, about that time my three neighbors 'happened' to stop by and the guy and his friend soon left. I called a friend of mine at the sherrifs department and he stopped by to talk to this guy...I don't think we will see him again.

This bum knew it was an unreal deal and that my father's mind isn't always there and he did this to him and then got nasty...I love a good deal, but not taking advantage of a person. I am glad this worked out well in the end.

Way to go Sal, you handled that real nice. It would have been a 911 call if I had been involved. I'm getting better though, have'nt shot at nobody for over 10 years now. I'm glad it worked out for you and your Dad, give him a hug.

I have no use for people like that, I'm happy for you that it turned out the way it did. If you want, send the guy my way. I know some readnecks that know how to deal with his type. Lesson learned. You don't mess with a man's wife or his tractor.

I respect the calm way in which you handled the situation. You came away with your tractor, your karma and your father's love intact. I suspect the slime ball's karma is in pretty sad shape and he lives with the results of that daily.
Good luck and keep up the good work.

I'm pleased that you stood there in a nice gentleman manor and not let this happen. Of course there is one thing you may worry about, and that this "slim ball" dosn't have a lawyer that can say your father made the deal and a verbal agreement is just as good as a contract.
I was born and raised in southern Missouri. And where I came from a person took advantage of some one.."they didn't live past midnight".. A lot of slim balls didn't make it to 12:01..
I give you a story that happen in early 80"s out in L.A. California at a gas station. I needed gas and pulled into this place that had some ten pumps and a small building in middle with a person running the place. This was the first time that I ever had to pay in advance for gas. I ask the man how this works, and he speaks in the "south of the border" slang and tells me I have to pay for the gas before pumping. I told him I didn't know how much gas I would need. I memtioned that it may take $13.00 or $14.00 worth.
I gave him a twenty and ask for a receipt. He wouldn't give me one. I pumped in my Buick $14.32 of gas. When I went back to the man to get my $5.68 he have me only .68 in change. I told him I gave him a twenty. He insisted that I gave him a five & ten. I told him where I come from, "you won't live past midnight".. I got my $5.00 bill real fast. Sorry to say some slim balls still live past midnight. .

One thing Sal did say, though, was that he had already bought the tractor. Since his father no longer had ownership, he had nothing to sell. The tractor was already Sal's. And a contract, either verbal or witten, must be a "meeting of the minds." If Sal's Dad wasn't thinking right at that moment, I don't see how a contract would be enforceable. If the slime-ball sues, Sal's Dad should request a jury trial. I don't believe I'd have given the guy a chance to get surly.

Unfortunately, there are some slimy, sleazy people out there. I am glad you stood up to them. The good thing is that there are some really decent folks countering what the slimy ones do.. That tractor will mean even more to you now.. Good Luck.

You know, there was a time when folks who did this to older citizens would have been taken out behind a building somewhere, had the h@ll beat out of them, and then encouraged to move elsewhere. My aunt in NC just got taken by a couple of scammers. They stopped by to check for termites, came out from the crawlspace telling her that her floor joists were eaten through by them and that her floor could collapse any moment but they could fix it. Dragged a few pieces of lumber under the house, hammered on stuff for an hour and then charged her $8,800! There was no damage, and they made no repairs. She's 88 and still lives by herself, and was a victim in waiting for scumbags like these.

You just wonder how these people sleep at night?

You did well. If it is not a win-win for both parties, it is not a deal. I have bought many items and I have always felt I got a good deal, but I have never thought I have ripped anyone off. This guy would have had to know this was a rip off to your father. This kind of guy doesn’t deserve an "N" at any price.

Billy, I paid $1,000 for the 8N, $500 for parts on the overhaul and some time helping on the rebuild. I feel I gat a great deal, but then again I am his son and we love each other...and my son will have the N when I am gone.
