Power washing and Paint procedures?

My tractor is ready for the power washing. I have to plug all the holes and tape off certain areas to protect them. I have a 3200 psi pressure washer so it shouldn't be much of a problem cleaning it up. After I do that I will degrease it. I'm wondering, the tractor appears to have its original paint job only. I doubt if all of the paint will come off, but I do not want to strip all of the paint off. It sounds like too much work. Do I just paint over the old paint and do I prime the bare metal? I figure, if the paint is bonding that well, leave it be and hope the new paint sticks on it. Should I use an etching process first on any bare metal? I'm going to paint the cast iron with Rustoleom.... brush and spray can process. I'm going to use the electrolis process for some of the parts, but I am having trouble finding Arm & Hammer Washing Soda in the stores. thanks for any help, oslo in nc

I got my A&H Washing Soda at Kroger, for what it's worth... Had to hunt for it, tho.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't plan on hitting critical areas like the seals with the washer. I will just hold it farther away from the work area. I will give the purple cleaner a try and I will sand before painting. I'm glad you told me about sanding after the primer is applied. I'll give that a try as well. Thanks for the information. oslo

A 1500 psi washer was pretty good about stripping paint off of my batwing mower last week. 3200 psi should really bust it off.

Some degreasers will attack paint.. purple stuff and it's generics will.

In general.. I like to sand down.. but do not always go for removing 100% of the paint. if it is decent paint.l. I sand the BLEEP out of it.. then prime, then sand the BLEEP out of it again.. then paint. I have just started practicing with etching primers myself.. so can't offer any advice there..

By the way.. 3200 psi will get water past seals if yuo are not carefull.
