Our local TV news last night had a feature about a little-known (Missouri) law. It seems that the state gasoline tax of 17 cents a gallon is a highway tax only, and they have to refund it if the gas is going into farm equipment, a lawnmower, a boat, etc.!

For people living in Missouri, go to>Link
and>Link download Form 4924 Motor Fuel Refund Application and Form 4923 Motor Fuel Refund Claim. Mail the application in to get on file with the state as a claimant, then every time you put fuel in a tractor, etc. send in a "refund claim" form with the gas or diesel receipt. Missouri refunded over $15 million to consumers this way last year.

If you live outside Missouri, you might check to see if your state has a similar law on the books. This is something people don't know about here, and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the same where you are.

I drove my 8N to a gas station yesterday and put in about 7 gallons that cost over $11. Now that I know about this refund law, at least I'll get the state tax back next time. - Sam

I wrote the state tax man in KY and this is their answer..... .....KRS Chapter 138 has two provisions for agricultural or farm use of fuel.
First, the gasoline or diesel fuel must be used in unlicensed vehicles in a
nonhighway manner. For gasoline, you must obtain a refund permit from the
Motor Fuels Tax Section. Once you obtain the permit you may purchase dyed
agricultural use gasoline from a licensed Kentucky Gasoline Dealer. You pay
the tax to the supplier and apply for a refund quarterly or annually. For
diesel fuel you may simply purchase dyed nonhighway use diesel fuel from the
supplier. The product is tax free when you purchase it. There are
considerable penalties for misuse of the fuel at the Federal and State
level. If you have any additional questions or if I may be of further
assistance please contact me.

I have an ideal what dyed fuel is but does anyone know?
