With as many N tractors out there in use,
why doesn't someone design a tiller that can
be used with an N tractor. Or why doesn't
someone make a clone of the Howard tranny.

I have been considering designing a tiller with its
own drive wheels so the tractor could stay in neutral
and the tiller would just push it along.

N tractors seem to be very popular. So why not.

I love Ns don't get me wrong...
But if you bought a 3 cyl 2 or 3000 with the 8 spd and Live pto you'd have a tiller tractor. Some times you gots to think outside the box.

As was said, a tow behind motorized tiller is thee way to go.
Sadly the only ones I've seen were like hobby/garden tow behind lawnmower types, nothing that would work for my N, but it would let me get rid of the disc and plow, get a chiselplow/field cultivator and have at it.

or...rent a tractor for a day with a tiller..

Yaa know..the whole thing is: the tractor is too fast ! So, there were many ways to sloooow down the tractor, like the Howard Gears, etc. BUT< How about SPEEDING UP THE PTO?? Any competent machinist could come up with a gear/chain drive speed-changer to boost the RPMs on the PTO without affecting ground speed. Should take up a little space, could be bolted to the 4-bolts around the PTO. Seems like there was a similar rig for the Ferguson Side-Delivery Rake to change the PTO to permit the tractor to be driven in third, rather than the 4th gear. Of course, this was the opposite, but the same concept should be working in this application. Might be worth a try. I'd do it, but I have about 150 years worth of projex at this time, and need to go to the dump dis week, and that sort of thing leads to me coming back with more stuff than I took! (Thank God 4 burn barrels) CC

The howard gear reproduction would be the thing to do!

I think Lumpy has it right. It would not be cost effective to do this considering that you can buy a decent 860/861 for about $1,000 more than a good N. The 860/861 makes a good tiller tractor due to the very low 1st geat and the additional power.

At the risk of starting creating controversy, the 871/881 is even a better tiller tractor because of the additional gears, some of which are extreemly low, and independent PTO. Usually 871s can be bought for less than 861s.

A friend of mine built one out of a truck rear end. That thing would throw a 25 pound rock about 50 feet. It did an excellent job of pulverizing the ground. I tried it at my house one time and when I dropped it in the ground the neighbor lady across the road grabbed her kids and ran for the house.

Pooh..... ..yer gittin' the cart before the horse ...er... tiller. Back in the 70's, in the central valley of Calif around Lodi (between Stockton & Sacramento and San Francisco) I used to see N-Tractors pulling AUX-ENGINED rototillers between grapevines. With seperate engine, NO NEED PTO gearbox.

Unfortunately, I don't know nor paid attention to who manufactured these 5-ft wide 3-point aux eng'd rototillers..... .....Dell, who has CRS
