I am trying to restore a 1947 8N. The plate where the S/N is stamped has rusted and I can't read all the numbers. I am afraid to sand it as it could destroy it. I have considered rust eliminator. An old CSI TV show had recovery of old gun S/N using an acid application and a fine grinder. If you have recovered a rusted out number, PLEASE HELP. The former owner apparently died without writing the number down. Shame!

My 1942 9N died, big time, not worth a rebuild. I found a 1952 engine with side mount distributor for the ole girl. There was NO serial number stamped on the block. However there was a steel stamped plate on the rear of the engine (where the trans. bolts up) held on with rivits, showing a serial number.

The tractor is in S.C. and I in Ohio for now.

What you found was an industrial engine, not a tractor engine, but will fit, industrial engine block should be made for fuel pump to attach

Ah, so THAT's what the sediment bowl looks like with gas in it when the bowl's not all black! (Up and to the left in your picture.) I have never seen a non-black one with the gas in it yet, so this is a nice preview of coming attractions! :-)

Actually, I cleaned it since this picture was taken. It's nice and shiny now, ready for the next 20 years! I even made a new fuel line for it, Hobo told me how. I bent it perfect and flared the ends just right.....then I realized the fittings were still on the bench and I had already flared the ends....

Woops!

Well, mine was BLACK. I mean, as if painted with lacquer that was, well, 50 years old. LOL

My Dad was Air Force. Everything was painted, polished, field stripped and in order! My riding mower is in a shed WITH a cover on it. Yikes.

Heck no! It's summer. They graze. :-) (And in winter, it's Jo's who has to, I mean GETS to, trudge out through the blizzards to feed the horses. I am ::cough, cough:: too old and frail.) --Dawn

What? You question my veracity? ::Striking a wounded pose that is assuredly NOT melodramatic:: I may forced to lie on the sofa all day because of this blow, and eat chocolate and read tractor parts catalogs. Oh, the horror! The calumny!

Ha! *wink*

The S/N is found on the block just below the head on a flat spot to the right of the oil filter canister.

You're probably looking at the Patent Data Plate (part number 8N-14001)- those can be purchased at any number of places. Your serial number is lightly stamped onto the tractor's engine block on the left hand side of the motor.
