I bought a 1952 Ford 8N back in February. After moving it from the Atlanta where I live to my property in Southeast Georgia. I used in a couple of times but very little each time. I noticed no real problems with the lift, but in checking things out I noticed the hydralic fluid was very milky. I was informed that that was not good and that I should change it. As it is over 200 miles from were I live to my property I don't get down to spend quality time with it every wekend. On my next trip down I drain the fluid. However in my limited knowledge at that time (I had not yet discovered ytmag.com and all the wealth of knowledge here) I only drained from the plug for the lift. After replacing the fluid I started having problems with it lifting heavy equipment ( well almost all). Last week end after doing research and reading numerious post from here, I went down and dove in. I checked things by removing the side cover and could not determine if anything was wrong. I removed the top and cleaned with kerosene and drained from all three drains. I removed the lift cylinder and replaced the 1 O-ring. It seemed that the ring was not nas big as the groove it went in but seem to have a good seal before and after replacing. I did not have the correct O-ring but used a local purchase that seemed to be the same size. I noticed that my pump doers not look anything like the one in the parts manual. If I push the activating lever forward by hand it pump fluid up the tube. Question 1 is therea way to check the pressure to see if it is correct? I did not seem to verify that the relief valve was working correct. I suspect from the write by ZANE that it might be my problem. I did notice some movement to the rear of the pump but assumed that it was from the PTO shaft turning. Question 2 If it is my Safety or Release valve is the part number in the manual 8N-638 going to work with the pump that I have? I would appreciate any help you have to offer. I really need to get the parts that i need ordered and get it fixed on my next trip down. The *n is really growing on me but I need a working lift to get anything done.

Thank you.
Jackie

First there are different pump styles depending on the year the N was made. 9N is different from 8N. Second, you can check hydraulic pressure at the port on the side of the pump. You will need to tie down the lift arms to do so. Ford once made a nifty bracket to do so, but a good ol' log chain around the axle & lift arm will work. Ford also sold a funny little bolt & adapter for the pump port for use with loader piping that could be used to connect the pressure gauge also.

I very much agree with Hobo, you need to drop the pump down and clean it, I cleaned mine with a sprayer and kerosene, then decided to drop it down and clean it, you wont believe how much slug stayed inside the pump body and little passages, you will be glad you pulled it out and cleaned it, I have only done it once myself but you will see what he means about cleaning it on the bench

To replace the relief valve you will need to bend a boxed end 12 point 11/16" wrench into a 90% bend so you can reach under the PTO to remove the old one.

Or since you have the oil out of the lift you could just pull the PTO shaft out the back and it would be easy to get to the relief valve with it out.

The 8N 638 will fit even if it is a 9N/2N tractor with the old style relief valve.

ZANE Thanks for the help. I do have a couple more questions. And from what I have read you are the Man. My tractor is a 8N but the pump did not look like the one in the parts manual. That is why I was asking about the 8n-638. Is there a way to test the pressure from the Pump? Also should I use a heavier type fluid?

Thanks

Jackie: I've got a '52 8N in Monroe County. If there's swirling behind the hydralic pump - it usually means a bad relief valve. Changing the relief valve out is quick ansd easy. 4 bolts and you pull out the PTO shaft. Then, you have easy access to the relief valve. It's on the back of the pump below the PTO shaft and is shaped somewhat like a small spark plug. Check the archives, there's a lot of info on checking them out and changing them.

Also, you reference replacing the o-ring on the lift cylinder but do not mention the leather back-up washer. For the NAA piston to properly seal, you need the right size o-ring with the leather back-up washer. You should also replace the top cover gasket and cylinder mounting gaskets when you open one up.

Hope this helps. GA Jim

Jackie: Here are the part numbers needed as listed in the Shelby, North Carolina parts supplier's web site:

Piston o-ring NAA 533-A
Leather back-up washer NAA 473-A
Top cover gasket 9N 502
Cylinder Gasket (you need 2) 9N 552
Cylinder gasket (you need 1) 9N 553

These parts are very inexpensive. Good luck ! GA Jim

You can get the backup washer here.. or at CNH or just 8n's.

You need it or the piston will cut the oring. Go ahead and get a new oring and top gasket and cyl gaskets and do it right.. ( as well as the relief .. if you need it. )

I do not buy into the top rinse of the hydraulic system I believe the only way to clean the gunk out izz to drop the pump. Or at least I feel better when I know I have remove all the gunk out of the hydraulic pump. I also do not use the leather back up washer cuzz I have had’em break, why I am not sure it may be installer error. I still have a few and would use them if I had to. I kin not figger out why replacement leather washers come in to different sizes. It must be a quality control issue, I now use CNH # 87051231 neopem (need a spill check) rubber type. My local dealer did not stock’em and I had a hard time git’em to order them. I found this new style washer by others who post here. Also I would git the CNH o-ring while I wuz at the dealer. That’s the best you kin do. If I find a worn lift cylinder then I replace it. Same deal it makes me feel better know’in I will not have to ware the bolts out on the top cover if I take a chance on a worn one. This izz my opinion others will have theirs all I kin say izz it’s the best way I know to do the job, YMMV
