I was quite taken by a 2N I once saw that had been painted a bluish-gray color. So taken I mixed up 1G of Ferguson Grey with a scant qt of Ford blue. Then bailed and painted my 9N Ford Red/Grey ;-) Used the custom mix to paint my two old lathes. Real purty machine tools and would have made a real purty tractor.

Angel..... ...them's almost fighting words "exact color" amoung the self-appointed sphincterly challenged tractor officiallity inspectors.

I can tell you that the N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) lists the 2N's paint as p/n: M-2888 Enamal, grey. Notta lotta help is it? Variously called institutional grey, industrial gray, battleship grey, smoke grey. (pickka name)

Claim that the currently available grey mix for Ferguson TO-20 & TO-30's comes closest to matching original 2N grey. Better'n various brands of tractor paints claiming to match 2N's. Problem is, Ford has had 4-different tractor grey colors.

Iff'n Ford ever published a paint chemical mixture formula its been lost in time ...ie... 2-cups of titianium white, 1-cup carbon black; 4-gals of enamel; eye of lizard, blood of a batt, boil and truble the old chrones cackled. (id: McBeth, W Sheakspeer)

Heres the deal, Ford painted the 9N's & 2N's the cheapest paint he could buy, industrial paint. And what was painted first thing in the morning didn't necessarily match 250 tractors later in the evening. And mondays paint didn't necessarily match fridays paint. Understand the dichotomy?

And even worse, my eyeball's gray ain't gonnna be the same as yer eyeball's gray.

Bottom line, its yer tractor, paint it any color that pleases you..... ...Dell, the 20/20 painter (looks good at 20ft or 20mph)

Angel,

Sometimes you can find the original paint color if you remove the air cleaner assembly. Then I would take the painted part to Sherwin Williams and they can match it real, real close. They can recommend their industrial enamels, hardner, etc. for your job. I always had good luck with them and the price is tolerable. Good Luck..John,PA

Make sure it is a 2n... If it is a 47.. it could be an early 8n.. Check the sn on the engine, though.. if it is a 2spd.. the chassie is a 2n.. etc.

As i said.. all 9n and 2n were dark grey. ford bought paint in bulk.. I'm sure there were minor paint variations year to year.

As old said.. you can match paint from a covered part.. or try a ferguson grey.. they are virtually identical...

I agree with Murn. The light ford grey.. is a creamy white.. almost beige color that the 8n and + used. The 9n/2n and ferguson used a much darker grey.. battleship grey.. or BPS paints 'ferguson' grey is close.

I'm going to attach a pic of one of my fords using the ford light grey, and another in another post of my 2n in ferguson grey.

Angel, I don't know who told you this but Ford lt grey is not what you want. Go to NAPA or any paint store and ask for battle ship grey and it will be so close you will love it.
