What do I need to look for when buying a used brush hog? I know very little about them. Would it be better and safer to just put the money out for a new one instead of taking a chance on buying a piece of junk? I'm sure there are some good, reliable, used brush hogs out there for sale. I just don't know what to be aware of when buying one. Then again, if they're good and reliable, why would they be for sale? : )

Neighbor (trustworthy) down the road put out a 5' Woods for sale last year - I stopped and asked him if it was in good shape - yes - then why are you selling? Took me up to the barn and showed me his new huge green machine & sez 5' too slow. How much - $200 - I sez sold!!! He even delivered it - works fine. I figure with gas what it is today, I can pay for it in another year by hogging the back 40 twice a year or so vs finish mowing every week.

Alan, I'm sure good used ones are around, but all them I found were beat and owners wanted 4 to $500 for them. After a couple months lookin for a used one, I bought a new HICo (Howse) 5' med. duty for $508 including tax and never looked back.

Bought my John Deere 5'hog a couple years ago for $25 from a guy who said it was a POS and would cost $500 to get parts. It was sitting beside his shed rusting. I spent another $20 on parts and it has run great ever since! Just use your creativeness and you will get along fine! You dn't have to have new, just working, is the main point! These are pretty straight-forward machines. You will learn a lot as you go along.

Alan,

I recently bought a bush hog for $50.00-The paint is gone and its a little bent up, but it works great. Look for at least these things: make sure the pto shaft turns the blades with little force, listen for troubling gear noises in the housing, make sure the pto shaft gaurds move independantly and freely, and make sure the deck is in good condition or at least wont rust away any time soon. Take an adjustable wrench with you and check to see if it has gear lube in the housing and if you can look at the gears while you got it open. mine had some minor cracks that I welded but other than being an eye sore, works just fine for the money.

Hope this helps, good luck!
Woodie

I would have to see it running before I
bought a used one unless it was in the
$100 range. A new 5 ft is $800 up.
You can check the blade rotation (uncoupled)
to see slop and bent parts.
Check deck for rust through.

Well, if u don't know anything about them..I'd suggest dealing with a Known Honest Local Dealer 4 a new one of a reputable Brand. Yep, there are some good used ones available, but also some real dogs. These machines do get used hard, and like any machine, are prone to cock-ups. If U do buy used, I'd suggest testing it out B4 payin' ur good $$ 4 it!! The current (lousy) climate 4 farming, combined with the (#*$&^#%@ URBAN SPRAWL (but that's another rant, hehe) has combined to cause a lottsa good farm machinery to be up 4 sale. BUT....if U don't know anything about it..trust a good dealer. (If there is still one of them about)
