My 9n has gotten hot a couple times while bushhogging now, so I am looking to replace the cooling fluid. First time (recently got the tractor, limited seaon use) and looking for how the heck you are expected to drain....I believe I see the screw at the bottom of the radiator but it is in so tight (as in both it cannot be turned by hand and seems in a cramped location for tools). Is there a method of draining that I am missing?

Also, given that it has overheated twice (merely replaced with water after the first), I was wondering if the thermostat could be causing problems. Is there a reason to keep it in?

I am hoping by opening the hood, the screw will be more accessible (will need to if I remove the thermo, which I do see is in the upper tube. Speaking of which, what section of the pipe leading into the air cleaner detaches to allow you to lift the hood?

Thanks for the info. It all seems good, so I am guessing it was related to coolant level. When filling, would I just cover the visible section inside or have it higher afte a flush? I was not sure how the thermo may interfer with a normal fill...

Hood does not just 'lift up' on these tractors, you have to unbolt it at the dog legs and also at the dash panel, disconnect the fuel line, electrical wiring for headlights (if you have em), and then lift the whole thing including gas tank off the tractor.

The petcock is the only way to drain the radiator, are you trying to turn it in the correct direction, mine opens by turning it clockwise. Seems just backward from what you would expect.

There is also a drain plug on the left side of the block above the starter.

If the petcock is stuck, the other way you can drain cooling system is by loosening/removing the bottom radiator hose.

My initial guess is that the first time was from low coolant, then from too much water (in the middle of the field, refilled with water). The radiator is relatively new, but will check. Thermo sounds like it could be a pain, with the work needed to open the upper area unless I can squeeze tools in...

Ugh. I was thinking of just disconnecting the lower hose, but saw it rises up a bit so I would expect to retain some of the original coolant. I picked up some pre-50/50 cooleant which I was planning to use, but I guess if it is off just a tad by whatever is in there, it hopefully will not matter too much.

Before you determine a solution, you might want to figure out the cause of the problem. You could have a clogged radiator, but there are many other more likely causes to it overheating. In order of probability: low coolant, too much coolant (just cover the core) debris in the fins or a loose fan belt. I'd check out all of these possibilities before I drained the system to check for a bad thermostat or clogged radiator. And always use a thermostat; if you don't, the tractor runs much too cool causing uneven engine wear & sludge buildup in the pan. Not a good thing. Oh, if you do need to drain it, remove the lower hose; Murpheys Law ofTractors says the radiator petcock is frozen & will just bust off in pieces.
