I brought home what I believe is a 1949 8-N from my fathers today. I also brought a bush hog (er, rotary cutter) that I bought him new in 1968 right before I went into the service.
The tractor appears to be there except for the s-shaped air intake tube and the Ford emblem on the hood. The wiring is a mess and I suspect maybe the coil is bad as the BIL had tried to jump it with 12 volts (it is still 6V system). All the plugs are out which brings me to my first question. What is the number of the plusg that should go in this engine? I don't mean the Ford part number but a number I can go to wally world and purchase to try to start this beast. It is going to be a long slow process which I am looking forward to :^)

Ron: Everything Ron said - and you can get all the tune up parts from NAPA. If they don't have it in stock, they can get it for you quick. GA Jim

Bruce has good suggestions, but I would wait on the tranny fluid until I got it running. Put the money on a new wiring harness. Cheap and quick. If the parts store is close I'd only get what I needed to get it started or determine what the situation is. Unless you plan on gettin' it running no matter what. HTH

p.s. Get a manual..IT FO-4. Most tractor stores or here on this site.

Congrats! These are fun tractors & useful as well. You should do a few things first off if it has not run in a while. Start by getting an I&T FO-4 manual. These are simple machines, but a little research will save you some trouble later. While you are waiting for the manual, pour some ATF fluid, a tablespoon or so, in each cylinder in case the rings are sticking. You will need to go to a Ford/NH dealer for a tune-up kit or mail order it from this site or other folks on the web. If all you want to do now is plugs, get 4 Champion H-12's or 4 Autolite AL437's, gap at .025. But, my bet is you're going to need more than plugs!Points/plugs/condenser & a rotor go for about $18-20. You will need to know if the distributor is in the front of the engine or on the side before you order parts; if it really is a 1949, it's on the front. You will need 5 qts of oil (30w works for me) and an oil filter (NAPA 1010)While you are at NAPA, get 5 gallons of 65-205 90w mineral oil for the pump/tranny/rear end. Don't worry about the coil for now, but I would invest the $25 (or $50 for OEM) for a brand new wiring harness, and a few dollars more for an ignition switch & a treminal block. The alternative is you will be tracing electrical problems for a long, long time if you try to keep the old farmer-rigged 50+ year old wiring. Get your parts together & tell us what the project is for the day & you will get lots of help. Oh yea, and we will also tell you how to jump it w/ a 12v battery & not burn up the V/R!
