The exhaust manifold gasket(s) needs to be replaced on my '49 8N. Haven't done this before - any tips? For example, do I need to use a gasket cement? If so, what type? Should it be applied to both sides of the gasket? etc., etc.

Also, haven't looked in the manual yet to see if it provides torque specs for the bolts - anyone know what it should be? Hopefully will be able to get the nuts off - look pretty rusted.

Thanks for any advice!

Rick..... ...NO PUCKEY (gasket cement) use "anti-seeze" on exhaust bolts/nuts.

torque BRASS exhaust nuts 27ft/lbs (new BRASS-NUTS $0.50 cheap)
torque manifold studs 50ft/lbs

BRASS NUTS are used so they "strip" their threads instead of unscrewing the manifold studs due to corrosion lock. Just run a cleaning die down the studs (7/16-20)..... ...Dell

The brass nuts are supposed to strip but it only seems to have worked for me about 50% of the time. On both tractors about half of my studs came out with the nuts. If any of your studs start backing out you will want to stop and drain the coolant before you go any further or you WILL get wet when the stud comes out of the hole. The studs go into the water jacket so you will need to use some gasket glue on the threads of any studs that happen to come out. I use the heat resistant Permatex goo for the threads that go into the head, and nothing on the manifold or carb gaskets.
